Actually Crit, your second attempt is not bad at all; quite brave and new for both GE and News design. It's always good to see something which is not an automatic 'fit' into what we would expect a channel to generate.

Sure there are easy criticisms over the artwork, but 'the idea' is key here; parliament/flag maintain a traditional route, but treatment-wise the black & white, in combination with a slightly pop art feel works well. Your typography is clean, crisp and stylish.

All I would improve is the dynamic; try exaggerating the perspective on parliament (pin/distort in psd/AE)
Make more of the faces, either in scale or composition.

Keep trying something different.

An improvement but I think the pictures of the party leaders need to be in colour rather than black and white... all looks a bit drab at the moment.

The suggested improvements:

If your after colour, I don't think the above is brilliant:

Another improvement with a bit of a 3d and SKYish look:
*

Still working on the graphics - very hard work to make them look good.

I am not a fan, sorry. They look like they were made in powerpoint with someone that thinks Nazi German bunkers were a nice colour.

Sorry, but when I saw your mock with Cameron's funny hair that looked like you had drawn it on, I just kept thinking that it should look like this:
