Daybreak

Wow, yet another Daybreak mock. How original. (August 2011)

So, I thought I'd jump on the Daybreak mock bandwagon, simply because I thought I had some reasonable ideas that *could* work well. So, here we go.

First off, a bit more background detail. I've kept the current logo, as the mock keeps the current colour themes, and even uses NeoSans. This mock is, therefore, a design that would be implemented in 'tweaks' to the actual programme. It could probably supplement minor set changes, and so on.

The graphics bring about a *proper* headline sequence, along with alignment of the graphics, unlike the current set where the 'detail' part of the name strap (ie, occupation, etc) goes below the clock. The 'Breaking News' ticker is almost in-line with the logo and clock, which are on the same level.

Headlines

*

*

So, we have a gradient-y grey and purple background, which is intended to be similar to the background used in the promos for Daybreak. We have a video of the headline centre stage, which extends off the safe areas. The 'Headline' strap will be accompanied by the date, which will be present throughout the headlines. The '5-a-day' bed would play over this.

Name straps

*

*

So, this is intended to be similar to the current Name strap, with the positioning different, and so on. I think it looks very neat, although I haven't worked out an animation for it yet.

Coming up

*

*

So, the Coming Up details are intended to be clear, and simple. Semi-transparent backer for the actual details, and Purple for the time, and so on.

Other misc. elements

*

The LIVE strap. Nice and simple.

*

Breaking News ticker. Logo, clock and ticker are all on the same level, which keeps it all neat and nice and, unlike the current Daybreak graphics, it doesn't have to move up and down when a name strap appears, and so on.

That's my work so far. I hope you like it, and any comments and criticism will be taken on board. I intend to expand this soon!

Nice work, you're right in that it's tweeks to the current look. Its simple, and looks good.
One of the things I would change is the ticker, even though you've opted for a more orange tone than yellow, I don't think the white stands out as much as the purple, or black would.

What does the live look like either on top of the daybreak logo, or next to the clock?

Thanks for your comments! I did try changing the placement of the LIVE strap, placing it instead of the logo, but then you strike the problem of not being able to tell the time if they're at a Location for a long time, and, it looks a bit strange next to the logo. I may play with the LIVE details going above the logo. As for the ticker - I chose a closer closer to Orange as the yellow clashed a lot more, whilst the Orange still stood out, but didn't clash with everything.

I'm looking to modify the text, because I agree it isn't right, just yet.

I'm also looking at weather, bringing back the 5-a-day, and so on.

You know what Critique, I do actually really like this mock.
I think that it is far better from what Daybreak have at the minute and that it does look a lot more modern and sleek.

I feel that all the font just looks too big and in your face. Also I'm not a big fan of the colours that you have used and the way you have used them. the best part of the mock imo is that you have used pictures to show the headlines and that's really all I like about it to be honest. I don't think anyone will beat the daybreak mock by Mike W, shame he deleted it. hope he does it again.

They're pretty much the same colours you've used in your mock. I, personally, think you're desperately picking at flaws because I thought the idea of you sending your Daybreak mock to ITV was ridiculous. However, that's my perspective - I may be wrong.

I agree that Beep has produced the beast Daybreak mock so far - through what little we've seen. However, he has reasons for it going and so on, so we should leave him to it.

I don't understand what you mean about the way I've used the colours. The name and occupation part of the strap is a semi-transparent white, and the heading for 'Coming Up', and so on, is Purple.

Whilst it may seem like I'm disregarding your comments, I don't think they're valid.

Certainly worth 3/5.

I have to say, I really don't like that font. It's not breakfasty, it's not newsy, it's not authoritive, it's not friendly. Plus the "W" is particularly ugly and clumsy shape.

I'd also drop the ALL CAPS TICKER & GRAPHICS - the logo isn't in full caps, so the aston's shouldn't be either, they clash. Also, especially with the ticker as it's constantly moving, ALL CAPS are harder to read - you can just about get away with it with a very simple font (which has been designed well), but not with this font.

Thanks for your comments. Looking again, I understand what you're saying, especially where 'London' is all in Caps on the 'LIVE' strap. I'll modify those elements and so on soon. I used NeoSans because Daybreak use it now, and for no other reason. I'll look to change it soon.

So, I've noted your comments, and made some changes, along with expanding upon the original mock.

I noted that I never created just a clock and logo slide - here it is...

*

I've changed the Name Straps, so that it isn't mostly in Capitals, like before, otherwise, they were quite neat, and remain unchanged.

*

*

The 'LIVE' strap has also changed. The location isn't in Caps, like it was before, neatening that up too. Part of it is also semi-transparent, like the name straps.

*

And, also, an odd 'Archive Footage' caption, which I made at the same time.

*

For the 'Coming Up' strap, whilst no-one commented on it, I didn't like the 'Coming up @ XX:XX' part. I've changed it to be solid, not semi-transparent - de-capitalised it too.

*

*

And, the ticker. It has also been de-capitalised.

*

Daybreak Weather

I thought I'd expand into the Weather too. So, I present to you Lucy Verasamy, a Weather map, with temperature icons similar to the current. The map used is the cut out of the map Lee provided, which he used in his Anglia News mock.

*

Apologies for the strange line running across Lucy's chest in the above image, and the other Weather slides below. My error!

Also, some 5-day-forecast slides, and the introduction slides used. Nice and neat, with Weather running behind the presenter, or, if a summary, Weather running down the side of the graphics.

*

*

*

I've kept NeoSans for now, although when I find a nice font to use, I'll switch to that. I do intend on changing it, though.

That's it for now. Any thoughts?

I do like your weather attempts. Very nice!

One thing I would do though, is have alternating strips for each day on the outlook chart so it looks like this :

TUESDAY:
