The idea came to me whilst looking back over the Channel 5 launch. I loved the vibrancy, the colourfulness, the youthfulness and how fresh it felt compared to the other 4 channels at the time. With the current logo harking back to the original with the numeral in a circle, I thought that this was something that could stay and the colours could come back to play within it.
I've split the surrounding ring into 5 sections - each having a colour (similar to the bars at launch) and have adjusted the colours to similar palettes in today's media.
I looked closely at a suitable numeral. I feel that the current logo feels too straight and clunky, but agree that it should be a bold type to stand out amongst other logos. I looked at many different fonts and found that 'multicolore' fitted the bill as a strong round edged character to sit in the centre of the ring.
Next came the brands. I wanted the colours to be a bold part of the redesign. The above image shows how each brand uses a different colour - darker hues of the ring colours. The colourful ringed logo sits alongside it with the text picking the appropriate ring colour (though a white version of the text could also be used).
At the moment, I'm still unsure about the multichannel logos - I may work on something different for these.
On the main channel the different colours would be used for advertising and within idents for different genres.
The blue/teal for News & Documentaries
Orange for entertainment
pink/purple for factual & lifestyle (different hues)
then yellow/gold for movies & drama
green for sport
As mentioned the colours would be used within trailers based on genre.
I like the 2014 refresh of trailer animations, so the ring idea would continue.
Please let me know your feedback, and any ideas for any improvements.
Many thanks, Mark
