Channel 5 Idea

An idea to mix the current circular identity to its roots of the 5 colours. (February 2015)

The idea came to me whilst looking back over the Channel 5 launch. I loved the vibrancy, the colourfulness, the youthfulness and how fresh it felt compared to the other 4 channels at the time. With the current logo harking back to the original with the numeral in a circle, I thought that this was something that could stay and the colours could come back to play within it.

I've split the surrounding ring into 5 sections - each having a colour (similar to the bars at launch) and have adjusted the colours to similar palettes in today's media.

I looked closely at a suitable numeral. I feel that the current logo feels too straight and clunky, but agree that it should be a bold type to stand out amongst other logos. I looked at many different fonts and found that 'multicolore' fitted the bill as a strong round edged character to sit in the centre of the ring.

*

Next came the brands. I wanted the colours to be a bold part of the redesign. The above image shows how each brand uses a different colour - darker hues of the ring colours. The colourful ringed logo sits alongside it with the text picking the appropriate ring colour (though a white version of the text could also be used).

At the moment, I'm still unsure about the multichannel logos - I may work on something different for these.

On the main channel the different colours would be used for advertising and within idents for different genres.
The blue/teal for News & Documentaries
Orange for entertainment
pink/purple for factual & lifestyle (different hues)
then yellow/gold for movies & drama
green for sport

As mentioned the colours would be used within trailers based on genre.
I like the 2014 refresh of trailer animations, so the ring idea would continue.

Please let me know your feedback, and any ideas for any improvements.

Many thanks, Mark

Overall I like the idea, but would tweak it a bit more.

I would change the name of 5 Star to 5 Extra or somehting more catchy. I probably wouldn't use that font either, it doesn't look right and to be a main channels font it looks to playful and kiddy rather than distinctive and representative.

I would also look at different end board designs than just the circle that Channel 5 uses. Perhaps ones that would look similar across all the channels but each one slightly different per channel.

I do like the idea of bringing the colours back as it was a great branding for the channel. I actually think the original 1997 logo works perfectly, if they inverted it to how it originally appeared as a DOG then it would look much better than what we have today.

Do you have any plans for idents and how they would look for each channel? Smile

I like that I immediately thought of the stripes from Channel 5 in 1997 even before reading it, but I'm not liking the font.

Thank you for the feedback.

Is it the font for the numeral or because I've carried it across to the brands? I also played around with a lighter weight but rounded edge font that could work, I will edit and upload to show what I mean.

Paddy I will work on a name for 5 Star - 5 Mix, 5 More.

As for idents, I'd like the colours to be used as a background with black & white imagery similar to the old Sky onc idents;

Love the logo. I immediately thought of the original 1997 look which can only mean you've suceeded with this.

I'm not so sure about the other brands though - maybe something else can be done, I don't like the colours or the layout.

The logo is fine, it's just that font used for everything else IMO it does not sit well.

Even for the logo itself, I think the font looks off. I would consider using a totally different font for the channel names and for the on screen branding, even if you decide to keep it as the logo typeface.

As for the end boards, I think they look too similar to what we currently have, so if you're going for a re-brand, try a completely different look for them and see what you can come up with.

Looking forward to seeing what you can do with this. Channel 5's entire network needs a refresh.

This is a good idea and good concept. The colours are good, the only problems are the font and the trailers.

The trailer has to be re-done completely I'm afraid. The only major downside really. As for the fonts, you can just test out a couple of fonts to see what works. Just something that strikes out within the concept.

But overall, not too bad! 3/5!

I like the concept, not a major fan of the font though. Perhaps for the endboard you could split the edges of the ring, like the logo - it will fit in alot more. You need to use a sharper font IMO, but other than those small points - it's not bad!

I did try a few different fonts late last night, something didn't quite work.

I've been testing an animation with the ring spinning that I may incorporate into a trailer end board.

Agree with those who like the concept but are not keen on the font. Definitely a good starting point though and I look forward to it developing.

Ditto to liking the concept but not the font.
