The Big BBC News Studio Refresh Mock Thread

I'm attempting to update the studio for every BBC News programme that needs it into BH style (November 2013)

What stops models like this being used as real on air VR sets?

DTV
DTV, I've made a space 5.8m x 5.71m for everything to fit into in the CI mock, so that's under your suggested dimensions and the ones I could work out, with space to spare for cameras and doors etc. I *think* maybe the lightbox/photo thing may just be very good at generating an illusion of it all being very big!

It's definitely doing it's job then!

I thought that VR studios didn't require much money to make the environs appear onscreen? I thought VR sets were cheap to make and also used as a cost saving measure, so what additional costs are there?

I think the initial set-up costs are really expensive but then obviously subsequent redesigns are much cheaper. It's more of an investment really. Correct me anyone if I'm wrong.

For something a bit different this time, I thought I'd spruce up the monstrosity that is the BBC Arabic VR set. It's used for (I think) news bulletins and Arabic Hardtalk, and looks terrible.

BBC Arabic (Virtual studio)

This could be due to the technology, but the design of the studios in general is quite bad too. For this studio, the measurements are quite vague, to the extent I've made everything as small as possible for the hopes of everything fitting in. It consists of a desk (a recreation of the one in Studio A), and not much else - even the rostrum is VR. As is the way with VR studios, the floor has to be some glossy reflective thing, so when anything real doesn't get reflected it looks more obvious. The set design itself is a blend between Studio B and Studio A - I decided not to go 'I'll reuse another studio mock for the VR' because when it comes to creating VR the studio recreations the BBC have done are never quite up to scratch, so I opted for something a bit simpler. (TV Camera borrowed from SketchUp Warehouse).

Is that to fit in the Salford studio or is it a scenario that the show moves home? Looks good so far!

Staying in the same studio at Salford - I've done a very basic recreation of the current studio using anything I can scrounge together, screen caps and that 360 degree view of the studio in NWT livery, and managed to fit that in - there's a second side as well...

Looks good - exactly what I imagine Breakfast would have looked like if it had stayed in London in Studio B. I do think the backdrop should be looking out over something rather than just having an image. Makes the set feel a little cold and closed off IMO - was never a fan of the look between 2006 and 2009.

If you get a chance to show us what this set would look like in NWT mode too (hopefully with a desk as it should have!) that would be superb!

Keep up the good work!
