seeing as bbc world news is now 16:9, as well as never having liked the solid colours of the present look, here goes.

few things first
1 | there's a translucent DOG + no ticker (1999 look) so the display is far less intrusive
2 | opacity is used (2007) to give a more interesting look
3 | graphics are 14:9 safe (just, i think)
4 | don't complain about the watermark, i don't want my stuff to get nicked again
5 | i know you can't see the DOG in bright backgrounds, that's deliberate
6 | can someone send the logo of the ident before the start of each programme (pref. in HD please?!)
7 | if demand is popular, a breakfiller is in the works

Quite nice. I don't like the light red backgrounds, the reflections, and by far the most it not being 4:3 safe which is a problem when most of the world has not made the switch to 16:9.

It does remind me of when the current BBC Sport graphics were introduced

He has stressed it is HD,(presumably only people with HD would subscribe) so there is no need for safe areas.

Wrong.

While you could argue that you could use 16:9 safe areas, they are still required, as not all widescreen TV's show the full picture, therefore requiring an area where graphics are not shown.

14:9 safe areas are probably the best bet for a BBC News HD mock, as some outlets are not going to be showing the full HD 16:9 signal, and 14:9 safe areas would allow the picture to be used more flexibly.

Even if every channel goes HD (which I doubt - not enough bandwidth to deliver to homes), expect 4:3 safe graphics to carry on for a lot longer. People don't like watching full 16:9 on the 14" TV they have up in the bedroom, and the 4:3 centre cutout option on the digibox gives them a much better picture.

Even so, this mock hasn't even used 16:9 Safety

Very good. I think this could have alot of potential.

I think for the first image, the countdown, you could try to make the numbers bigger and bolder. Make them stand out.

For these images:

Make the text on the strap left-aligned. It doesn't look very good when it is centre-aligned.

Make the breaking news strap longer. There needs to be more of a gap either end of the text.

Similarly, with the name straps, make the text left-aligned.

I like this. They're very neatly arranged. Maybe slightly bigger, however. So people watching from afar can see them.

With the endboards for World News Today, make the text bigger and more striking.

I'm not going to diatribe about safe areas. Just make sure when/if you have a second go at this, you might want to arrange the graphics slightly differently to fit aspect ratios.

I like the translucent straps as well. They are alot nicer to look at. Maybe you could change it from a solid colour to a very subtle gradient. This certainly has a great potential. With a few alterations and additions, it could be a great mock. I would definitely like to see the breakfiller, and any other work you're planning to do with this.
