A studio mock, to be precise... (March 2012)

After reading through people's comments on the current BBC World News studio, and how they'd improve, I set about trying to recreate said studio in everybody's favourite piece of software (SketchUp), and then change it bits and bobs to how I'd like it. In the shots I'm about to show you, I've tried to line up the shot to match the shots that 'the eye' posted in the BBC WN thread

In my mock, I've 'squared off' the studio, bringing it more in-line with the other BBC News studios. I've also changed the oval baking tray to a rectangular one and put an N6/N9 style desk in. I've attempted the N6 style desk, and think it's gone quite well (I spent quite a long time studying DrewF's desk in his mock, as it is splendid).

Also in the style of N6, is the videowall. In N8 currently, it's surrounded by this silvery border, but in my mock, I've bordered it much like the BARCO's are bordered in the other News studios. I've also removed the rail from the backdrop, and bordered that, too. For reference, the backdrop is from the Euro elections a few years back, but this is only as N8 has a real backdrop, and so there wasn't an image of the actual backdrop.

Of course, due to BBC World News moving to BH very soon, this wouldn't make much sense in doing, however, let's take some creative license, eh?

So, let's take a look...

This first shot is based on this image. The main differences can be seen, including the videowall, and the bordering around it, along with the desk.

Next shot is based on this image.

Okay, the backdrop is different, as previously mentioned, but this shot shows the new desk, and how the new studio isn't a complete departure from the current, but more of a 're-alignment'.

*

For my third shot, we've got a wider shot, showing off more of the new desk, the baking tray, the backdrop, and the borders around it, and then also the videowall. It's based mostly on this image.

*

Up next, some shots of the Hub, and it's presentation. First off, a shot based on this. A nice close-up on the videowall.

Next shot based on this shot. Here, we see the standing-up position, with my recreation of the podium used.

...which rounds off my mock, so far. Would love to hear your opinions and thoughts, along with other ideas for changing N8 (I had the idea of making the desk and Baking tray moveable, so the anchor can sit at the correct point of the desk, rather than on the edge of it when in-front of the videowall). I will expand to the N8 pod if there is a generally positive amount of feedback, along with other shows. I may also render it. Thanks for reading!

Looks quite nice to me - personally I think N8 would look better with simple square glass panels anyway so this idea would go well if it was to be done.

As for improvements, I'd like to see an actual newsroom made to go behind the studio walls, instead of the backdrop. It's not too challenging to do if you give it some time, I've done it in the past with the intention of showing it on here but managed to lose it. Will do it again in time, might well start it again tonight!

Thanks for your comments! In terms of an actual newsroom - I'm not sure if I'd do it justice, but I'll take a look and see if I can work any magic. I'm glad the actual design is generally sound!

I'm going to look at rendering the first few images, too, I think.

I rendered just one of the shots, to see the result, and this was it:

Aside from all the fun and games in the Comedy Central thread, I'd forgotten about this mock, which was unfortunate, as I'd make some headway with it!

I made a sort of Pod studio, in a way that would only be viable if WN wasn't moving. If it was, it'd be getting some lovely square glass installed, with a new desk, albeit a smaller version, and the same bordering that we've already seen. I've taken what DrewF said, about actually making the newsroom behind it for this next stage, and have started work on it. It's pretty rough and ready at the moment, but I wanted to share my progress.

So, that was the image. What you may or may not find interesting to note there is the frosting on the glass.

Of course, this needs development, but, as previously mentioned, I wanted to show the progress so far.

As you said, it needs progress and more work, but looking well so far.

Would be good as the new domestic studio too. It's pretty dull at the moment and adding the extra presentational area would help it a fair bit.

Like the design+quality+effort a lot! Very Happy
