It's because people keep mocking the BBC logos without substantially changing them and aren't actually doing anything more. We need a bit of creativity back in this place.

Maybe people are also doing it since the BBC are due a rebrand. This might continue till they do.

Are they though? Just because on a few channels it has been longer than pervious in terms of gaps between rebrands doesn't mean they are due one.

If you are talking about the BBC as a whole then any idea for a change in logo is stupid given the immense cost of changing everything and the fact it is one of the best and recognisable logos in the world. If you are talking about individual channels BBC News had a relaunch 2 years ago, BBC Three received a new set of idents 18 months ago and BBC Two has got a new lease of life because they bought back the well liked, characterful and successful branding that they had lost. That is what a channel branding should be about - character and success. The idents and logo should imbue the character of the channel and only a fool changes a successful brand.

Character: This is partly why most of these relaunches don't work - they are part of the package. Uniformity only works if it allows individuality to shine in another way - this is why the 1997 logos worked well. Though they were uniform, they only worked because of how they were used in connection with idents and the like. That is where the character was and this is why these mocks don't work. You can't show channel characteristics in a set of uniform logos, you need to show how it would work. Idents, presentation, news graphics etc. Even colour and font doesn't fully show character - you can't convey BBC Four's mix of arts, foreign drama, classic TV reruns and experimental comedy in a font or a colour (people on here have simply put 'Four' in a serif font, which shows a tedious lack of understanding of BBC Four). It can be done to an extent - CBBC and CBeebies have perfected this by having a fluid and continuous style in logo and idents which not only incorporates the BBC brand but suits the audience.

Success - The BBC Blocks Brand is one of the most successful brands in the modern world, far more so than ITV in comparison. It is timeless, flexible and universal hence why it has been used for nearly 20 years and probably will be for the foreseeable future. In the same time period ITV, on the other hand, have had a series of poor logos which haven't been utilised well and are nearly all very much of their time thus meaning they have to be quickly changed.

When it comes to individual channels though, the BBC's are very strong in brand. A channel rebrand shouldn't be because it's been 8 years since you last did it, it should be out of necessity and nothing else. If your brand isn't working, is rigid or is negatively received - you need a rebrand. Yes BBC One hasn't had a full relaunch in 9 years but the brand is working, is flexible (hence why the current stings slot right into the BBC One look) and its only criticisms seem to be from TV Forumers who are annoyed that it's been 9 years since a relaunch. The brand is successful and doesn't need changing.

BBC Two, however, realised that they had a problem with Windows on the World - which lets face it would look a lot better if it hadn't followed two of the best sets of idents in TV history. What BBC Two did was take the bits of the brand which weren't working (leaving aside the neon endcaps) and replace them with the bits of a previous rebrand which did work. People like retro, people liked the 1991-2001 incarnation of BBC Two and that is why IMO BBC Two looks better today than it did 18 months ago. BBC Three works well as does BBC Four's set of idents.

BBC News works so well that it is instantly recognisable to most people. Only the stupidest channel editor would ditch David Lowe's pips and beeps which are an integral part of such a strong brand. The pips and beeps have been on for 16 years and aren't tired. Do they need replacing? No.

BBC Channels aren't due a rebrand. They are successful brands, rule no1 of branding - do not change a successful brand.

PS-the only channel which does really need an overhaul of its onscreen image is BBC Parliament, in order to bring it into line with BBC News. But that would be a tedious mock, because it would just be a copy of BBC News and look like this...

...and that is what actual presentation decisions and rebrands are like. Tweaks. The controller of BBC Television is not likely to go "you know what would be good, a full rebrand of all our TV output and News graphics during a time of budget cuts, when our output portfolio is considerably larger than it was in 1997 and all this despite the fact most of the channels are currently using successful brands". Why? He'd get fired.

Well the logos are jumping around, and general aligning needs sorting.

The first one is a significant improvement to the square window, and I can really see it working on-screen. I'd stick to that layout.

The right aligning needs some work, and the picture needs aligning to the non-coloured space properly, but otherwise it's great.

3 stars. Would love to see this animated Very Happy

BBC One = Works really well, like to see a ident linking to that one
BBC Two = OK, but it doesn't suit the logo
BBC Arts = A bit dull, bring it to life a bit more.

All in all, good job. 3 stars!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

There should be a TV Forum ban on using BBC logos on ITV Idents!

At least the person who did it was not the creator of this thread, or else......
