BBC News in the style of The Nine

I read your latest post from the bottom up, so assumed it was a breakfast/north west tonight set not picking up on the fact it said ‘Look North’ rather than North West Tonight.

So I’ll write the next paragraph as what I would have said if this was indeed a in Salford...

First I’ll start with the negative. The backdrop image is awful. The Spotlight image works as a background because it’s so vast, varied and most importantly there is nothing in the background that needs to be moving. Even though it’s city backdrop it’s almost abstract so it doesn’t get boring, if that makes sense? I think you’d get bored of this after 5 minutes and it looks odd that no cars are would be moving. As it’s a effectively network set I’m sure they could get a budget for a large LED screen and the backdrop needs to be better than this image.

However as a way of bringing the NWT/Breakfast in-line with the rest of BBC News the set design would probably work in the space and it’s a very nice workaround given the lack of space.

Now, the only reason I’ve posted those initial thoughts is because I still think it would work as a Breakfast/NWT set and would be a nice way of bringing it inline with the rest of BBC News. And knowing it’s the not designed with that in mind the rest of what I’ve said is relevant you’d need to find a better solution for the backstop, sorry I mean backdrop or at very least a different image.

So the backdrop is terrible, but I can’t dwell on that this set design is fantastic and a great way of bringing a smaller studio with less options inline with the rest of the news output.

So I’d still give this design full marks. Well done.

Yeah, the image isn't the best, it was the only one I could find that didn't have the actual Queen's Court building in it, as I wanted to find one that would be similar to the view from the newsroom. I did look at having a similar view to Plymouth, looking onto Hull but I couldn't really find a suitable one.

Wasn't really feeling it for BBC News but love it in the BBC Sport colours - justs looks so much more vibrant and modern.

This is really a beautiful mock, very well done! I am impressed at how much thought you put into this.

I have a tiny suggestion about your proposal for Business Live: the big square's duration might be a bit too long at the start, it takes space; so I thought, why not making it appear at each of the first two beeps, each time followed by a fade-out; and then at the third beep the square displays but stays on while the text "Business Live" appears.

It's nothing more than a suggestion on a detail, really! The whole thing is beautiful!

The Nine is heavily inspired by TV Avisen's package. This is the 2018 refresh. Lots of similarities.

They can but the large borderless screen has recently been replaced by a smaller framed LCD screen to give a sharper picture on the weather forecast.

Bit on the bland side (but most things are these days), but I like the updates done with the mock.
Can't wait to see where it goes from here.

If you think it's bland take it up with BBC Scotland, it's rated outstanding because it's a perfect recreation applied to different scenarios.

This post highlights quickly how I imagine breaking news looking, as well as something else which happened last week...

For Breaking News, I struggled with finding a way to highlight and differentiate breaking from the normal story graphics, the inspiration stems from the current sting and accompanying graphic used on the studio screens, where the bar animates on, holds for a second before wiping off and that continues. Mine would have a similar animation, in that every 5 or so seconds the red segment would redo its beginning animation wiping on before it goes off again, I would hope that this also gives it a sense of 'alert' rather than just being an annoying pulsing bar.

I currently don't have access to my video files to create an animated version, so for this full post I can only provide stills, but hopefully you can visualise the animation from the previous videos in this thread.

I'm also trying out, that because the pulsing should stand out, 'Breaking' would only appear on the initial part of the graphic (currently where Breaking and the story text alternate)





The second part is all about the election. Election graphics are something which started a while ago, and was planning to adapt to the 2017 programme, but considering it took me a while to come up with some ideas, I decided to hold it off until after last week. For the logo, I took the current hexagon and expanded out the pattern to fit the square, the starting triangles are same colour, with the extra ones being changed to continue the rainbow pattern. The 'Election' text is taken from BBC Scotland's logo for the EU Elections (derived from The Nine).



To show you how I've applied my graphics to the Election set, I've decided to apply it to Scotland instead of reliving what London attempted. One thing I didn't want was to add an extra line for the results, so I've decided to shorten the flipper and have a mini-flipper for the results alongside it. For declarations, I've added a Sky News-like element of the line changing colour based on the party, I've also employed the breaking style pulse.

Very impressive work, yet again, PATV. Lovely stuff. Can't fault it.
