My first mock to be uploaded here, gone for a BBC News look for their move to NBH, staying with the Red theme, I've come up with a brief mock, and want feedback to know if I should continue or not?
I like the modifications you've done to the 'News' texts. Serifs seem to be all the rage at the moment. The graphics are good too, but why are you using the balloon background? The ticker is way too small.
First thing you should have done after the logo is the titles. Its extremely difficult to judge how a set of astons would fit in to the overall branding without knowing what that branding would be.
The texture in the logo is obviously duplicated and stretched and i cant understand why you have used an old BBC One ident. Although adding serifs is a good idea, it doesnt quite work when put next to the boxes as the gaps are then unequal. Moreover the boxes seem pointless as they are not echoed in the astons. However all that pales into insignificance because nothing is lined up properly.
For the Astons; the font you have chosen is badly aligned in places and not particularly legible on smaller screens. I recommend using Black or dark colour text for better legibility on Yellow backgrounds. It is also obvious that the stretched balloon texture is the same in all your boxes, and whilst the inner glow is sort of okay on all the smaller boxes, it falls flat and looks very amateurish on your headline text strap.
The 'BBC News' logo featured in the astons is the only thing about this mock that i would keep in its current form.
I would expect a rebrand mock to at least include title sequence stills if using a new aston design that does not fit in with current branding.
Overall, a poor mock due to poorly thought out idea and mediocre execution.
Two BBC News logos? It would be nice even for the BBC to just use one version.
Yes serifs are coming back, but not when it's Gill Sans with pointed corners (which reminds me of the 1989 ITV logo), certainly a fatter proper serif'ed font would work better for headlines.
I think red and orange would have worked when the Balloon was still being used, but not now, I'd personally stick with red and black, or even a bit of red-purple.
