BBC World
I really, really like Avenir. It's an outstanding font, and I think it is a sound replacement for Gill Sans -- although, personally, I would happily see Gill Sans survive. Maybe that's just because in a branding sense, I associate it strongly with the BBC. But if it is to be replaced, then I'd pick Avenir in a heartbeat over Helvetica/Swiss.

In the broad, I also like these designs. I'm pleasantly surprised by how the strap, DOG and ticker sit together as a block so neatly. It is remarkable the difference simply changing the height of the DOG and ticker makes -- compared to the current graphics, which run to the bottom of the screen, this design looks much cleaner. I also like the decision to retain the existing design of stretching the strap only to the right-hand side of the screen -- though simple, I view it as a distinctive part of the modern BBC News brand. With revisions over time (and ignoring the period where the straps stretched right across the screen), I think it still works as well today as it did back in 1999.

However, I will echo the comments about the choice of orange for breaking news. I don't have an issue with the colour per se, but for breaking news, there's something about it that doesn't tell me 'this is important, watch me now!' -- it doesn't convey urgency or importance. Even Al Jazeera, which also uses orange (albeit a brighter, opaque version than this), seems to struggle with this in my eyes -- but that might just be because I think the orange graphics get overused on AJE to emphasise key stories. The only alternative I can think of, in terms of avoiding a solid red block as in the current graphics, is to use a black strap with a bright red or yellow breaking news heading (still with white text for the story description). I'm mindful though that the combination of red and yellow may conjure up a visual association with McDonalds!

I usually love your work Martin but somehow I feel this mock is just a bit too similar to what we have now. It's pretty much the same only it's not 4:3 safe, the logo and ticker don't stretch to the edge of the screen and you've used a different font. Other than that, is this much more than a recreation rather than a mock? You say what you have seen so far of the NBH graphics leaves you disappointed - I think I would be much more disappointed if we got this. Perhaps if you show us how it may animate, perhaps in a different way to now, I might be more open to liking this mock.

Well the idea was to move over to HD without ruining the current branding. Not to do something totally new. Looking at what has been shown so far, I am disappointed because it looks weaker, and cheaper IMO.

Ok, so the consensus so far is that Orange is not a good choice for Breaking News. And people want something a little more different to the current.

I always find it difficult when I don't think there is too much wrong with the current design. Smile

I normally adore your work, Martin - but this I don't - it's not so much how similar it is to the current, it's just a bit boring and hardly an improvement on what we've got!

That being said I can NEVER fault your execution and consideration of upscale/downscale artefacts as well as typography (though the sentence case Avenir looks off!) so for that alone you get a 3/5 from me, plus an extra one because frankly it's better than nearly everything else on page one of the gallery!

Very clean, I love both iterations. Not 100% sure of the font though but think it would grow on me.

Great to see you do a few mocks again Martin! It's been years.

Still images dont really do this justice. The animations work very well, they are not distracting and I feel they would not be out of place on the BBC. Graphically superb as usual. An excellent, if minor, variation to the current graphics.

4/5 - You have shown yet again that you have the skills to produce excellent work.

Here are a few quick additional layouts I have been exploring...

Not sure if any are worth progressing on. Its tough from here on out, as I personally still like the current graphics, and the use of Newsnight, Breakfast, Local News logos on the straps/on-screen are limiting in terms of how they can be placed/ Boxed logos do not work for them, and the idea is to maintain the current branding, only cleaner and in HD
