Evening,

I thought I'd tackle a mock that was, a few years ago, done to death, but has now been succeeded by Daybreak. In my BBC News mock, I bring back a more boxed look, in an attempt to neaten things up, and bring things that have been shoehorned into the current look, like the logos on screen during GMT, Impact and The Hub, more neatly into a new look.

For now, I have only a few images, as I look for your opinions on the mock so far, before I expand (which I plan on doing). The images so far are for the BBC News channel.

In the images above, we have the box on the left displaying the 'Breaking News' text, or whatever, with the details of the story on the right. I've tried to keep it neat, and it is all very 'boxy'.

Comments appreciated - will try to expand soon!

it would be nice to maybe have the time on the screen

A tad too reminiscent of the 2003 look. Anti-aliasing would work. Also Arial is a horrid font to use, SwissBT all the way (and no Gill Sans).

Rather plain at the moment, and like AxG has said, don't use Arial. It's an awful font.

There's room for improvement though, so keep going.

An update to the mock. In this update, I've changed fonts, moved things around a bit, and added an example of a LIVE strap.

Also, I've done a few examples of programme-themed graphics. In the example here, we have Orange for Breakfast, and some captures of mine from GMT, which I've assembled for the OSG for the programme. However, the GMT ones will probably adopt the style of Breakfast in a later revision.

No place for a clock, yet, but I'm adding one!

Getting much better, the only down side is the darker orange used for the Breakfast strap.

I like this...

Still the font in the ticker could do with being smaller, and bolder.

Also, the BBC NEWS logo looks odd having two different fonts in it. I know Gill Sans is a hated font, but the font you've chosen unfortunately ruins the logo... a difficult task i know, the only font i could find on my computer that is an improvement *sniggers* over the original, is this one...

Your straps/astons are superb, perhaps look to making the Breakfast one feature the programme graphics like your GMT one.

It's a bit iffy to me. Astons look a little bland.

I think you should change the text alignment on the correspondant's name straps so that it aligns to the left. As opposed to the current set up where the text seems to be in the middle of the strap with a lot of unused space to the right. I appreciate you are keeping to safe areas but it would neaten things up if it was to the left!

But its coming along well now! Lets hope you bring a bit more innovation to this instead of reworking the past Smile

Agree that you're hard pushed to better Gills Sans when going for the [BBC] x look but I'd argue Swiss is as good a choice as any for News.

The GMT mock is the one to use as a base for updates, really like the look of that.

What's wrong with Gill Sans? For a logo I think it's perfect and has stood the test of time, but perhaps it's not brilliant simply for text.

The bold typface in the logo looks odd as I said previously, the narrower one is fine, but it begs the question, why change it when it isnt massively different to Gill. Its not as if the letters in News are spaced poorly like the original BBC Two logo such that a new font would be an improvement.

Although i'm quite open minded to a change of font for the logo, i have yet to see one that is an improvement on Gill.

The rest of the Astons would benefit from the use of a different font, and i dont see any problem with Swiss, although please for the love of Jebus, dont use Arial/Helvetica.
