The "O" in BBC One just reminds me of Bolton MBC's current town logo for One Community! And, to be fair, don't like it as I feel it is a politically correct symbol! (not that I am against PC just that it can go too far!)

I think this is the only politically correct logo I've ever seen.

To me it's iconic because even non-press-geeks can easily identify it as the BBC "2" without context, same as the Channel 4 "4", but unlike the BBC One "one".

The Channel 4 '4', perhaps. But the BBC 2 is just a plain number 2. It is not iconic to anybody but TV pres geeks. It's a plain numeral. Show it to anybody and ask "what is this?" and they'd say "a number 2", not "it's the BBC Two logo!"

You make it sound as though the '2' is set out in Arial.

It's a modified version of Gill Sans and so is unique only to BBC Two, since it doesn't appear in any official Gill Sans typeface, apart from the version in Ultra Bold of which it was presumably based off.

I'd agree with you if the 2 looked like this

But it doesn't... it's a very unique numeral and has been in use since 1991.

Think about what you're saying. I agree with trivialmatters. Do you honestly believe if you showed people the 2 on its own, not in an ident or without any hint of a BBC logo that will people will attribute it to BBC Two? People would just say it's a number, whereas the 4 has a very distinctive design which is easily attributed to the channel.

I think if we didn't have the current ident package, it would be more identifiable. Bare in mind that the first batch consistent of a big, prominent 2 right in the middle of the screen, with the second being a little robotic character that caught your attention. Now, the 2 is a hole. A hole or a wing mirror. It's not being put to good use.

I very much agree with this.

The design of the 2 in the early 90s was deliberate, to complement its original uses - and the vast majority of those came from being a solid block. So of course they could rebuild BBC 2's identity while keeping that 2 on, but would need to use it in the ways it was designed for, and not strangle the bulk of creative ideas by choosing a concept as limiting as now.
