I like the BBC2 logo incorporating the blocks into the "2". As iconic as the "2" is, I do think unlike C4's logo it isn't irreplaceable and unless they bring in an amazing new look sometime soon it's hard to see what they can do with it - the current look is close to killing it off.

I do suspect at the very least the "2" will cease being a character within the idents and be slapped onto filmed scenes with the next set - and in a way that needs to happen so it can have a new lease of life in a few years time.

I think some of the feedback here is grossly unfair. Let's not judge this as a Dan Gooding mock, but a creation based on the standards the gallery displays in 2012; in which case your design once again is exceptional.
I like how you have incorporated more innovation into channels that are now aging fast. I'd love to see these develop further, Dan. Well done.

Is it strange to say: is it time to say goodbye to the blocks? The blocks are already 60 years old.

Lambie Nairn said during the 1997 rebrand that the blocks are iconic in identifying the BBC, and he shows that having the letters 'B' 'B' and 'C' outside of boxes could indicate anything, but the boxes symbolise BBC in the same way the globe symbolised BBC One.

Why do people always says the "2" is iconic? It's a numeral. Lots of things have a number 2 in them. A number 2 is not so massively iconic that if you show somebody a "2", people will say "ah yes, that clearly represents BBC Two".

Back on topic - I like the BBC News logo in this set and the BBC Two one. They're both a nice progression.

To me it's iconic because even non-press-geeks can easily identify it as the BBC "2" without context, same as the Channel 4 "4", but unlike the BBC One "one".

Yes - was going to attempt to explain, but dosxuk puts it adequately Smile

I don't think the comments are unfair, but realistic - as I've already mentioned, there's technical ability, but that doesn't bely the fact that they are poor designs for the reasons I, and others, have set out.

The Channel 4 '4', perhaps. But the BBC 2 is just a plain number 2. It is not iconic to anybody but TV pres geeks. It's a plain numeral. Show it to anybody and ask "what is this?" and they'd say "a number 2", not "it's the BBC Two logo!"

Nah, you're wrong there. Pretty sure 90% of population would know the 2 logo represents BBC Two.

If you asked someone what it was, they might say a number 2 at first. But if you asked what it was the logo for I'm sure large proportion would know.

I'm someone who understands 'normal people' could tell you hardly anything about the things we deem of interest on here.

You make it sound as though the '2' is set out in Arial.

It's a modified version of Gill Sans and so is unique only to BBC Two, since it doesn't appear in any official Gill Sans typeface, apart from the version in Ultra Bold of which it was presumably based off.

I'd agree with you if the 2 looked like this

But it doesn't... it's a very unique numeral and has been in use since 1991.

Think about what you're saying. I agree with trivialmatters. Do you honestly believe if you showed people the 2 on its own, not in an ident or without any hint of a BBC logo that will people will attribute it to BBC Two? People would just say it's a number, whereas the 4 has a very distinctive design which is easily attributed to the channel.

But the thing about the 2 is it was part of a branding scheme that changed the entire perception of a channel. But it was more than just the 2 shape. It was about how it worked on-screen: how it followed a theme that caught peoples' attention. A rebrand is much, much more than just the logo - it's about image. The 2 was loved, not because of its shape, but because of the image it was part of. Channel 4, in exactly the same way, has an image - and the logo is one element of that.
