Am I the only person who believes the current BBC logo is timeless and doesn't need replacing for the foreseeable future (if ever)?

Agreed. But, eventually they will need replaced..

Why?

In lets say, another 50 years they will want to have something fresher. They will want something to represent the BBC brand of that time - not the BBC brand of nowadays.

In what way does the current logo reflect the BBC brand of 'nowadays'?

The logo itself is fine (and relatively young compared to many TV logos around the world). The overall BBC branding does need updating but it's the way the logo is used, not the logo itself, which needs reviewing.

The creator of the font Gill Sans (Eric Gill) was the sculptor who carved the stone at Broadcasting House, and used a version of his font on it. Broadcasting House is now the main building housing the BBC.

Although in these days of Operation Yewtree the BBC might want to distance itself from Gill!

The channel logos need updating, but the BBC logo doesn't need to be touched. We've seen that it's adaptable to anything from youth-orientated content to adult contemporary radio stations since 1997. It's inoffensive, it's easy on the eye, and it's simple. A change of font will make it look like a horrible knock off job.
