The younger the child the less likely they'll know or even care to be honest, and once you're below about two years of age they ain't going to remember any of this anyway.
Older children? Varies. No end of examples in the news of children up to age of about twelve who seem to know what's going on, why they aren't at school and why they can't spend the day with Grandpa. After morphing into a teenager they'll think they know it all anyway
