I've had alot of experience with many programmes and I haven't come across one without some sort of a downside. However, i'd recommend Ulead Videostudio as a trial. Out of the ones i've used, it's the most stable (not saying it's 100% stable) and produces good video, though it can be a bit clunky at times.
Adobe Premiere Elements is more trustworthy but less user-friendly IMO. They both offer free trials however, so see what you think.
I've never found Vegas comfortable to use. A good programme for me is one which is user-friendly, and I believe that's what matters most for video editing software.
