Hello,
I was wondering if someone could provide me with a breakdown of the file formats used to create channel branding, news graphics and watermarks (both animated and static).
Thanks

For post production, software like AVID or After Effects will be used. These use standard file types like TGA, PNG, JPG etc but the files saved by these software packages, will be custom to that software.

On screen graphics will use hardware and software provided by companies like VizRT or TriCcaster from Newtek - which will take in elements in PNG, JPG etc files, but will handle the animations and effects internally.

oh so news tickers etc. can be any of those file formats? I would've thought that each had a specialized format

What are you actually wanting to know? All of the heavy work of creating on screen graphics live is done by specialised software taking multiple files. For something like a simple news ticker, there might not be any files involved at all, with the configuration stored directly in the rendering software, and the text being retrieved from a web server.

Learn Viz RT software, Viz Artist etc, that'll get you a job if you're skilled enough in it.

Visual Graphics presentation has a lot of working components.

No one file format is used. A lot of the software is proprietary and often contained to work with a suite of software, but some can allow other package suites to be imported into the system.

A lot of the creations showcased in 'The Gallery' are all created locally using software that computes and renders work.
Adobe After Effects, 3DS Max, Photoshop, Audacity. These are are suites that render work into a single format object, which can be statically generated like a film, image or sound.
PNG, JPG, AVI, WAV, etc.

Often these files are resources which are components of visual on-screen elements such as maps, logos, backgrounds, ambience, scenes.

Something for News Tickers and Lower Thirds often use Real-Time software like Viz RT. (Open Broadcaster Software is a free basic alternative if you want something to try out from home).
They have access to information either from a database, data feed or a in-built tool that will allow the displaying of Text (along with any visual resource needed) on cue.

Channel 9 Australia has an interesting video about how some of this stuff is put together.
