That is the story I remembered when I first read this thread, but to win the competition you have to fill in the missing word, so the only way to be sure is to find out where the quote comes from and listen to it before phoning a local radio station at 8am armed with the correct answer.

EDIT : Also, we don't know that he was talking about Talking Telephone Numbers, unless that was given as a clue on the wireless.
