A sting is something you get from a bee.

A bed is something you sleep in.

Er, no, seriously.

A sting is a short piece of music which is used as a short 'interlude' between two pieces.

A bed is a longer piece of music which is used to talk over with.

A sting is a short animation usually accompanied by a piece of music (or, indeed, it might be music with no animation). So, for example, BBC News 24 opens with titles every hour. At half past, there is a shortened version of the titles - this is know as a sting.

A bed is a piece of music (often quite repetitive - or a 'loop') which is played while the presenter(s) speak. So, in terms of news, a bed is the music over which the headlines are read.

Hope that helps to clarify things for you a little. I'm quite sure somebody with a more technically-accurate and eloquent response will be along shortly.

I don't think there is any difference between a vamp and a bed, and they're the same thing. In much the same way as an "aston" could be called a "super".

Here are a few examples from News 24 and Sky News:

N24: Bed/Vamp - Used at the top of the hour, before the main titles.
N24: Sting - Used at half past the hour, after the weather and trails.
Sky News: Bed/Vamp - Used at the top of the hour, after main titles.
Sky News: Sting - Used occasionally into/out of ad breaks.

As has been said, a sting is general a shorter version of the main theme, used to separate segments of parts of a programme, news, weather, sport etc. Hope that helps.

I always thought that a vamp was like the introduction part of the bed, for example the drum beat at the start of the Breakfast bed.

Techincally speaking vamps are improvised with one instrument. In TV/Radio though vamp simply refers to the musical underscore and is equivilent to a bed. There's no difference.
