Requests etiquette

Just something that's crossed my mind... (September 2012)

I agree with most of the sentiments here, especially that over the last 2-3 years there has beena significant change in the culture here on the requests forum. I have requested a few things from time to time, but for the most part will just download anything which appears which interests me. I'm not into, and don't agree with, the new generation of 5-year-olds who are on this forum now just asking for stuff repeatedly for the sake of having it and/or ruining it with a stupid mock. I also don't agree with the whole "I'll only trade it" culture, as as others have stated, nobody actually holds any ownership of the themes and music which we share here.

Annoyingly I lost a fair share of my music around a year ago because of a computer fail, but I tend to just wait for someone else to request it. It certainly isn't so important that I need to request things 218245t00000 times like Identity-crisis etc. In fact though - I did lose the original Daybreak/Lorraine package when my computer died, but daren't even touch a thread about it now Laughing

I think it's telling that I've been here for 7 years and have made about a quarter of the posts of certain users who have been here for around a year but don't actually contribute much to the forums........

I'm baffled by the arguments for trading.

Let's be clear - the music given on a site like this is for the personal enjoyment of theme geeks. There's no value in any of it, except for the private happiness of an individual.

If you're ascribing a value to it, or believe its your responsibility to limit the distribution of tracks on some arbitrary idea that you're protecting something - you're WRONG.

However - if you've been given a copy of something by the owner - composer, or someone involved in production who has access, and are asked not to share it, then you shouldn't share it at all. That's a respect and trust thing. You certainly shouldn't be sneaking around breaking that trust - or worse - justifying it because you've asked for something in return.

So I'm forced to conclude that those "full packages" mentioned probably fall into the category of 'things given on the understanding that they won't make it onto the wider web'.

That's not particularly nice behaviour. Worse when you reward yourself with a "trade only" deal. That's a bit like expecting a fee for doing the wrong thing.

If these packages originate from more open sources, then who the hell are you to control the release of material you don't own? Why would your geeky happiness be more important than anyone else's?

There's really no combination of any of the hypotheticals I have stated that makes you NOT come across as a d!ck, so good luck with that.

I never understood why people feel the need to advertise that they have tracks but will only share them as a trade. Surely that is just bragging, if you have something and you want to trade for it do it via PM, its a request forum not a trading forum.

Wouldn't it be better thatcher than having 'requests' to have 'Library' where everyone just posts tracks that they have and 'tvforum' lists them alphabetical and then there's no "I want this" or "I'll only trade you". It just makes us all one big happy sharing family

And immediately Asa's inbox would start filling with takedown demands from the people who actually own the stuff.

Of course you can't see these pages until you register. So if this place did create such a place it might be worth well putting in another layer or password to gain access. But not to new users, ofc .ir a new user asked about it then you know something fishy going on.

If you want to create a library of copyright infringement, adding that onto an established site for another purpose would be idiotic at best, regardless of extra passwords / hiding it from Google.

From the bans on requesting non-free fonts and library music, we know the appropriate people are aware of this site. At the moment there's not much they can do about it, other than request that this site discourages infringment. By actually hosting the files it opens a completely different can of worms. One labelled "legal fees".
