They are from a music library, central used a music library, but according to, they comissioned the compoers to make different versions and 'mixes'.

Absolutely, it's pretty common practice.

If we think back to the 1999 ITV News themes. Although a number of versions appeared on the KPM website (and were indeed released on CD), we know that a number of different mixes actually appeared on-air.

Same applies to the 1992 News At Ten theme. The opening titles are available from KPM on either CD or download, but the closing titles never have been. Even then, the TV version of the opening titles were very slightly re-mixed after a few weeks, with added drumbeats.

Of course, in the process of making the opening/closing titles, occasionally the TV companies will re-edit their own versions of the tracks, which they're quite at liberty to do with library music. This means that in some cases you'll quite possibly never be able to get hold of every mix of every track simply because the music libraries only ever hold their original versions.

The most famous example is the difference between the original version of "The Awakening" and the original TV version of the News At Ten theme. "The Awakening" is quite a long and pretty stirring piece of classical music, but the News At Ten edit is short, strong and to the point. Now, as it happens, these days KPM offer their own edited version of "The Awakening" which is a lot closer to the News At Ten arrangement... but it still doesn't match exactly.

For my own part, when producing various radio shows over the years I've obviously utilised much production music, and sometimes you simply get the feeling that a particular track would work better if edited in a slightly different way. Perhaps doubling-up an underscore on top of the main melody of a track will enhance it further... that constitutes a remix that the libraries obviously won't have, but then that's just the way it is!
