Looking at the Telethon '90 finale clip, £23 million must have been a massive figure to raise back in 1990, and with regions making a few million each, why did they stop doing it?
And how did it work, I was far too young to remember, lol.
Was it a case of starting at 7pm on Friday/Saturday night and finishing at 10pm the following?
Was it hosted through the night and did they put on performances and specials, or were they used as links through a normal nights programming?

a number of reason:
* 1992, raising £15m ( less than half?
* franchise changes in 1993.and the cheap arse replacements
* protests from a group of disability rights activists from the actvist group, the Campaign for Accessible Transport, later known as the Direct Action Network. Its members claimed ITV Telethon broadcasts had depicted people with disabilities in a patronising fashion.[1]
This had included a demonstration outside of LWT's Kent House where the main broadcast was located during the 1992 Telethon and two demonstrators had intruded on the studio when the broadcast took place[2].

Umm if memory serves me right it usually started on a Sunday night and ended on a monday night. Would have been a bank holiday weekend.
Again if I remember correctly it was kind of like Children In Need but before it got full of music acts all night.
They had the small regional output bits like Children In Need. I remember this because I was at my local station for a brief period of time as I had fundraised. I think that was for 1990, I would have to dig my letter out to check lol.
In the regions you had your regional phone number on screen, or in the case of Channel on a background to hide the number for TVS.
I say bring back the telethon.

It certainly ran through the night, though I'd imagine the amount of regional output was far less overnight. It was usually on a bank holiday weekend, I think originally the may bank holiday but the last one was on an August bank holiday IIRC.
It was such a big undertaking, as well as the main network show from LWT each region had its own event even Thames/LWT had a seperate event. Not really too much different from Children In Need etc. but think of a number of local performers (not just singers) mixed in with the odd 'big name'.
I've got a fair bit of footage from the TVS 1990 Telethon, some of which will be making its way onto TV Ark. TVS actually split the region in two, so had two events going on at the same time, with another on Brighton seafront and a seperate outside broadcast for keeping an eye on the total.
I can't imagine it was too cheap to stage even if most people gave their time and resources for free (or in the case of companies a bit of free advertising).
