In which case the simplest option is probably to record the Stereo Mix or Line Out or whatever his sound card calls it. Double click the speaker icon in the bottom right of your screen; Options > properties; Click "recording" and select OK. Put a tick in the box for Stereo Mix, Line Out, Line, Output, CD Audio or something similar that basically isn't Line In, Mic, Aux, SPDIF or any other setting.
Open Sound Recorder (or if you've got it Cool Edit/Adobe Audition). Play the DVD, hit record on Sound Recorder or whatever you're using. Save As. Bingo bong you've got your file. Thousands of free WAV-MP3 converters out there, just do a little google.

Or you could just download a trial of Ulead Videostudio 9, select the Rip from DVD option, and transfer it as a WAV thorugh EO Video..
