How does Later with Jools Holland work?

I figured this didn't deserve it's own thread in the main forum as I'm digging for knowledge that will not benefit my quality of life.

I started watching Later with Jools Holland a couple of years ago and favoured the live Tuesday show over the extended weekend show. I'm not quite sure why. Last week I decided to switch, but I had recorded both the Tuesday and Saturday show inadvertently. Now I always assumed the Saturday show carried on from when the Friday show left off. But I found that not to be the case. Both shows started differently, and the performance that closed the Tuesday show wasn't to be seen anywhere in the Saturday show.

So what gives? Is the Saturday edition filmed as a completely different show before or after the Tuesday transmission? Or are they both filmed in one go, half of it goes out live, and I've made a complete balls up of trying to work this out?

Well the Tickets site suggests its a three hour recording block on a Tuesday from 8pm which would cover the live show at whatever time it goes out (10pm?) so presumably what you see on the Saturday show is what got recorded in the two hours before the live show.

So they're two different shows? I always assumed it was literally an extension of what is broadcast on a Tuesday as that's how it's promoted.

Well colour me enlightened. Thank you.

Not sure if this answers anything really but I went to a recording a few years ago, apart from a LOT of standing, painful feet etc; the recordings start on Tuesdays 8pm and finish at 10:30pm (the 10 - 10:30 being the live show and some of the featured bands having to re play the songs they've done earlier in the recording).

Can't really help on the Saturday show but must all be part of the same earlier block.

Yeah the standing around for hours on end is documented here:

Of course its plausible that other recording for the Saturday show happens outside of the Tuesday recording block and is just edited in later. No different really I suppose to any other programme.

I've been, and it's exactly as Neil and Put The Telly On describe.
