Hey everyone,

My first question I'm not entirely sure this is anyone's field but knowing the fonts people have and their knowledge of where to get them I have a query.

Wonder if anyone has, preferable, the current Dallas font used in the opening credits of the TV show. There seems to be 3 variations of it, 2 of which bare major similarities just one isn't as bevelled. They are all effectively the same font but I wonder if the style would make it easier to locate. I'd be happy using the original, which is not dissimilar to a outlined Impact, but would much rather the new one.

Secondly, does anyone know an exact way of recreating the opening sequences, more specfically the famous three-way split. I've been involved in the #SaveDallas campaign and someone has asked if I could do something with the opening credits for a fan video and I couldn't say no. Plus, I think it'd be a nice thing to learn.

Presuming it has initially got something do with drawing a shape and then creating a mask in which the video of the character would play, is there an easier way? Also, the transition between each character is quite nice but I'm not exactly sure on how to do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FONTS

One I probably want the most:

Slight Variation of it:

The one used in the opening sequence:

OPENING SEQUENCE (In case for some mad reason someone hasn't seen it before)

Thanks for ANY help offered,

Declan

I did that in Premiere however I've found some Sony Vegas YouTube tutorials similar to what you're trying to do:

Hopefully it gives you the jest of it.

Thanks buddy,

I'll keep these a shot.

If you think of any other ways that I can do this please give me a shout. Also, I like the transitional way your text comes in how do you do that?

Any idea where I can find the Dallas font?

Thanks for your help!

I did that in After Effects, essentially it was a case of separating each letter into different comps/layers and using the 'Stroke' effect. I added a Light and dragged it further back in 3D space. And then added some motion blur to make it look smooth.

The font seems to match Enamel Inline, but it looks like its been tweaked for the Dallas logo (the 'S' in particular)

Ah thanks for that.

Great, I suppose it is close enough, I doubt I'd be able to get my hands on the official one so that is good enough!

Thanks again for everything.

There may not be an official font - many text logos are tweaked versions of a base font, meaning there isn't a font which contains the exact letter shapes used in the logo. An example is the famous Microsoft logo:-
http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130524025007/logopedia/images/thumb/f/f4/Microsoft.svg/300px-Microsoft.svg.png
- it's based on a version of Helvetica, but you won't be able to find a version of Helvetica that includes the "slash" between the "o" and "s".

One reason this is popular is that marketing type people want people to use the official logo in materials, not something that people have typed in the same font that looks OK to their eyes. By making logos from an adaptation of a typeface, you can ensure the only way the logo is distributed is as a single element.

I think it actually may be Cyclone, when I searched for a free alternative to enamel inline (didn't find one) but came across Cyclone inline. The "S" in that is more appropriate. May have to buy Enamel inline, unless anyone has a free version?

Anyway thanks for your help, nice explanation.

I wonder if you have any further tips to carry on from dbl's advice in recreating the credits? Remember I have access to photoshop, after effects and vegas.

No need for the caps on the title is there!?

I accidently clicked the "answered" tab and now this appears answered.

Although everyone has been extremely helpful someone else might be able to offer further help and so I do not find this thread has reached its conclusion.

I will keep the caps to highlight the above to passers by and hopefully a moderator will see it and remove the "answered" tag. Unless of course, the shock of someone having caps in a title is mentally impacting you?

It just appears a bit rude... even though it isn't intended that way.

But this ↑ is rude.
