My soundmax audio software seems to be broke. It opens but stays **** on the Taskbar, it just doesnt open. Ive restored the PC, unistalled the software, reinstalled- tried everything!

Does anyone know of an alternative so i can change the volume and recording settings?

Thank You

The Windows mixer - double click the speaker icon in your tray?

That speaker icon went months ago, just dissapeared. I click on Volume Control, go into Control Panel try it that way etc it just wont come up. Stays in the tray/

Configure it in the Sounds & Audio Devices control panel, all the options that'd usually be available to you via the Volume Control program will be there.

Or if it's playing up drop a £15 soundcard in, solves the problem.

Easiest way to get to the Windows mixer if it's not showing up the full window when told to, and either sticking in the taskbar or not showing at all is to try going to the start menu, go to run and type sndvol32 . Its certainly worked for me every time my machine's volume access has gone funny.

... though they've changed it all in Vista!

Thanks Nini and Tesandco, i tried it in the Run thing but it opens it in the task bar so i cant open it up fully, its such a pain. I think a new sound card is best, but its not broke is it, as i can still play and hear songs?

It does sound like the soundcard itself is working, just some internal Windows Component is messed up. Before getting a new soundcard, it'd probably be worth trying uninstalling just the drivers on the current one, then accessing the mixer as mentioned before before reinstalling. If it says something like 'no mixer device available' when you try it implies the software stuff is still working so you might get away with new hardware. If not, then there's every chance changing the card will result in the problem remaining.
