OK - so I've never liked the current background graphics used to make the set for Breakfast. The colours look dull, and the set feels far too clinical for a morning news programme. There's only so much you can do of course when you're relying exclusively on a set of screens to create the right ambience. However, I think these represent something of an improvement:

Wide angle:

The clouds would slowly move, while any story/segment graphics would be contained in the stylised frames in the middle of the main wall and the end of the right wall (shown here with a generic BBC Breakfast graphic).

I couldn't find a cap of the current Breakfast studio from the other angle - as I understand it, Breakfast doesn't use a desk much these days anyway. But if it did (and I think it should), I wanted to give the other side of the set a newsier feel, with one side showing the newsroom with a globe overlay (a la BBC World News), while the relevant section on the main wall is decorated with some elements from the news graphics as well as an analogue clock just to add a point of interest to the design.

Importantly, credit goes to tellywatcher and This is Five for the original caps.

I like it but is it perhaps a bit too bright and distracting?

I'm liking the new logo though.

I like it (i am remembering that the screens dull images somewhat)
It would suit BBC Breakfast to what they use ATM.

Now this is a definite improvement. Perhaps tone down the blues a bit: make them a bit less cyan and a bit more periwinkle. Other than that... excellent . 4/5.

Trouble is, a blue sky/clouds backdrop is what they really *did* use at the start of the last revamp. So many viewers complained (supposedly) that they dumped them for the horrid orange squares a couple of weeks later. I for one preferred the blue sky/clouds. Much more cheerful to wake up to.

I too preferred the blue sky, though perhaps with this one having other colours too, it wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Yes, I can see that the blue might be a bit bright - what I was trying to do was to try and minimise the contrast between the blue sky and white clouds, while not dulling the image too much (which is a large complaint I have with the current backdrop - it's so muted that it becomes a sea of bland nothingness).

I think the problem with the original sky backdrop that Breakfast used was that it was too stark. And with only blue and white used, it did feel cold. Added to that the problem of the screens not lining up properly (an issue I understand has since been resolved somewhat), and it just didn't suit a morning news programme. I believe the idea was good in principle, but it was just executed poorly.

That was kind of the idea I had. What I started off by doing was creating some 'windows' in that corner of the set that looked out to the sky. However there's a real problem with making something like that look authentic when it's only displayed on a stack of screens. But utimately by incorporating a range of elements into the background design, the idea was to make the set appear more vibrant and inviting than it currently is.
