It definitely wasn't there at the start of the channel, the kids shows were just linked with normal continuity at first.

Wasn't the story that it was intended as a spin off from the afternoon show Cappuccino, which is why they called it Milkshake? (which thinking about it is amazing they have been able to keep that name given the restrictions on advertising and focus on healthy eating in recent years).

I found this clip a while back, really odd style of presentation at this point with someone off camera (presumably a producer or crew member) making constant comments throughout in the background. Sounds like they were trying to do a Big Breakfast type thing but with just one person it's a bit distracting

Channel 5 had an afternoon show called Cappuccino?

What's this show called Cappuccino you speak of? News to me, having had a very quick Google the only reference to anything to do with Cappuccino as a TV show in this country was an TV adaption of an Adrian Mole book, but that was in 2001.

Aha, there was a morning show called Espresso, and a mini version called Double Espresso

I remember a lot of their original programmes but no idea what that was, presumably some sort of daytime show

https://www.prweek.com/article/95921/media-brief-channel-5-orders-espresso - "A cross between This Morning and Watchdog, the programme, called Espresso, will be presented by husband and wife team Pattie Coldwell and Tony Kerner and tackle topical issues, give advice and encourage viewer involvement. One of the regular things on C5 in the early days was the endless appearances of cut-down versions of their regular shows with repeats and a bit more chat when a film wasn't exactly two hours long, so you had Espresso Update, 5's Company Late Extra and Exclusive Extra filling gaps all over the place. I remember rumours that hardly anyone was phoning up Espresso so some of the "callers" were quite close to home.

And that happening with BrainTeaser caused serious issues for them years later.

I quite liked BrainTeaser, it was cheap as chips presentation wise but the concept was a good one.

Sorry yes, it was of course Espresso. I mis-remembrered it being in the afternoon, but if it was on directly afterwards then that makes more sense.
The anecdote about Milkshake being a spin off from it was relayed in Broadcast around the time of an anniversary, probably's C5's 10th I expect.

Sounds plausible, they didn't take it one step further and have an evening strand called 'Beer' though Very Happy

If the date is right on this, I'm surprised they didn't edit out the shot of the World Trade Center in the titles…
