Am I missing something? What happened before that?
From the Countdown Wiki:

Cathy Hytner also acted as hostess in the early seasons. Carol and Linda only appeared when writing the numbers game solutions (both the contestants and their own) on the board. Whitely made a point of introducing Carol or Linda partway through the show, during the first numbers round.
Countdown Masters was notable for being the point where Carol started putting up the letters rather than just doing the numbers round.

From the Countdown Wiki:
Quote:
In early episodes she was only called upon to provide the occasional numbers solution, alternating with Dr. Linda Barrett. When Linda left at the end of Series 2, Carol took on the role of solving unsolved numbers games full-time. After the departure of Lucy Summers in 1989, she began putting up the letters and numbers as well.

Another YouTube find. This being something I remember requesting to see years ago... and it's finally emerged.
Jenny Hull and Eamonn Holmes experiencing a leak in the studio. They cleverly decide to just stay stood in it as it gets worse, but the audience smartly all brought umbrellas with them.
Then they merely nearly drown inside the studio, the audience being windswept away and then being decapitated by the set.
It's How Do They Do That? and they even show afterwards how they did it.
Now we just need to find the one with Eamonn hanging off the the signage at BBC Television Centre.

Absolutely one of the most vivid TV memories from my childhood, amazing to see it again!! Although the older me now notices the switch from video to film halfway through :p
About the same time was the episode of Knowing Me, Knowing You where Alan accidentally kills one of the guests - done so realistically (with a brief cut to a BBC2 caption slide) the 6/7 year old me genuinely wasn't sure if it was real or not.

The temptation to edit that National Lottery invasion footage around Eamonn's comments at 1:54...

Here's a BBC Two Wales continuity from 2001 posted by J Harper (previously ROTSSIsalive)
But those Comedy Zone idents/promos, man. Was it ever made to make people laugh or feel haunted by the terrifying early-CGi Anne Robinson?

It definitely does sound like him, so I think it could be Matt Lucas...
Is that Matt Lucas voicing "Anne"?
