That's a sun outage rather than an eclipse though. And as you can see they only last a few minutes- the eclipses on the Super Channel videos last an hour or two. I believe an eclipse is when the sun is blocked out from the satellite and therefore the solar panels can't get energy and it loses power. I believe modern satellites have some form of battery backup so they still stay online during these now.

Hmmm, you're right. Here's a description of it from Intelsat: http://www.intelsat.com/tools-resources/library/satellite-101/eclipse-seasons

Yes it'll presumably be lack of batteries that made the Superchannel outages last for several weeks every equinox rather than the few minutes on one day that happens now.

I remember on the TV Ark video the (male) announcer was at pains to stress that the eclipse in question was "the last one for the time being" and that a full 24 hour service would be available from the next week onwards.

That's one of the funnier videos from that channel.

I'd love to see what that junction into PWC would actually have looked like, with the opt out point for those regions that were not taking it to go to the test card and the continuity announcement into the programme which I believe came from Cardiff over the BBC Cymru Wales ident.

The BBC Two series This Morning with Richard not Judy isn't available on DVD and therefore you have to rely on off-air recordings of varying quality to watch it nowadays. Some kind soul has (relatively) recently uploaded their own copies of both series, but series 2 is in widescreen recorded from a Sky digibox (as evidenced from the "in widescreen" continuity announcements) which is rare. This is just one video I link to here so click through to the main channel for the rest.

WHY has this never been repeated!

It was going to be released on DVD

Seems Stewart Lee pulled the plug on that idea, see here: http://www.mustardweb.org/stewartlee

Also Stewart appeared on Richards podcast the other year and it was a bit awkward....

As for why it's not been repeated, well they've always said or didn't get much support from the BBC. I imagine it's considered to be one of those things that's of its time, it was intended to go out live, with a Friday cut down repeat. But even things like The Mary Whitehouse Experience don't get repeated (on telly at least) because they just don't stand up well after all this time.

Mind you I never thought Lee and Herring were funny back then either

To be honest I posted it here mainly because of the digital-only continuity announcements and widescreen TV from the early days, which you don’t see too many clips of.

Incidentally, do we know which transmitters/regions took Pobol y Cwm? If it was just on BBC Wales surely Cardiff would have opted out for their own announcement and the rest of the UK would have been none the wiser.

I remember in the late 70s/early 80s we received some Welsh language programmes on BBC1 and/or BBC2 for a while during afternoon closedowns - though I'm not sure if Pobol was one of them. Extended sequences of the BBC Wales clock and globe are about all I remember now.
