A few minor updates to correct things:
Hinttext returns, search should be fixed, can rate mocks again and hopefully the problem occassionally posting should be fixed. A separate change should also help with the posts appearing in wrong topics problem, although it's been hard to recreate.

Here's a queer one for you. The [video.] tag doesn't seem to work anymore. [wsvideo.] is fine though.

Why do we never see moderators posting any more?

Why is a thread like this: http://www.tvforum.co.uk/tvhome/help-news-writing-help-31990/ still around?

There's such a slow reply to things nowadays. Is it because the mods never visit the site? If any sense of enjoyment has gone from the site on their part, is it not time from them to hand over the role to somebody with more interest?

Frankly, though, I don't know who. Whilst I've chosen that thread as an example there are a plethora of posts I could have used instead because it's just so typical. I hate to say it, particularly as the forum seems to 'go downhill' every four days according to some, but the lack of posts by older members is noticeable.

So - who would even want to moderate the site these days? Is it going to be left to someone like NorthTonight?

There really are a handful of posters whose posts are worth reading. Jonny, Gavin Scott, Andrew Wood, David, TonyCurrie, Pete, and a few others (I was going to mention more - so please don't despair if you haven't received the honour of a mention from me) all post interesting and valuable information - but they are just a few compared the the swathes of inane rota discussion, Daybreak speculation and so on.

Often, when the site goes through a bad spot it soon recovers - but with so many members seemingly vanishing this time, can it ever happen?

I've been mulling over this for a good few months, and I may have got it wrong - I'm really sorry if so and I hope so. But this is just how it seems to me - and it's a real, real shame.

FYI I'm here pretty much every day, I don't wade in as much as I used to but the thread you mention isnt particularly auful IMO, it's a little out of place here but it's had mostly sensible responses.

I can appreciate the frustration at "rota" posts interrupting a decent discussion. It’s a fair criticism and something we can work on. However where the line gets drawn is very much up for debate.

Take…
Grainne presenting with Dan today. Not seen her before but she's ok

Not particularly informative and little effort in justifying his opinion however both rob and Gavin Scott followed it up, followed by others for a few more posts. So should that initial post have been banned in the first place, or removed by us, or just left?

Regarding the “HELP WITH NEWS WRITING.... PLEASE HELP!!!” I’m sure all us mods spotted it, I know I did within about an hour but by then a couple of members had taken the time to respond with some decent suggestions so I didn’t see the issue in letting the topic die off naturally. To be honest, it’s probably my own naivety in not realising how the thread would go - there are clearly members who are like moths to a flame. I simply do not understand why they feel the need to waste their time contributing to a topic of no interest. If I go on another forum and see a thread started by a muppet I have no interest in, or with a topic title that leaves me in little doubt about the content or the starter’s intelligence then I simply won’t read it.

And before it gets implied that I’m not letting anyone post their frustration in a topic, I think there’s a world of difference between people highlighting problems in an established topic than posting in a very new one which would disappear soon enough anyway.

The site is ten years old in a couple of weeks. To expect a plethora of the 'old school' to still be here is very optimistic, whether they were here at the start or in the last few years. I think we all want good quality but not every topic can be as detailed or informative as ones like ‘Networked ITV - 1990s and before…’. The site should be allowed to have a range of personalities and levels of intelligence – we’re all going to find some members more interesting than others. Whilst we’ll continue to try and keep idiots off the site and take care of those causing threads to be derailed, we need everyone else to just get on with using the site for what it’s for. And that involves no clique and no elitism.

Is it time for a "Personalities and Presenters" board on the forum, and restrict all rota and stalking discussion to there?

+1 to what Dosxuk said.

Also, if I click for a random topic, I do get random ones, but the ITV Telethon thread comes up far to frequently, coming up 2/3 tries.

That post is slightly unusual given that it appears to be about a new presenter (I wouldn't know as I don't watch Daybreak) which is surely where they line should be? New people, major swap arounds, that sort of thing seems normal. However when certain members post nothing *BUT* that sort of thing is where the other line is.

Well that's fair enough I suppose and that hadn't occurred to me. However I suspect that the rota thing is getting peoples backs up so much that they become more likely to snap at threads like that one.

I hardly think its elitism. There are many members who joined long after the old Lounge "clique" who were initially annoying but are generally put up with. Beep Chubby, CBBC, Darkest Dreams, Freeview, G4 & barcode were all particularly infuriating at the start yet have calmed down and are (to varying degrees) counted as normal members of the forum.

However none of them, even at their most hyper, or childish, or poorly spelt moments, posted nothing except "I noticed Natasha was sitting with her legs different this morning, could she be pregnant?"

And *THAT* is where the issue lies. Not with newbies, not with boring members, not with poor spelling, with with absolute stalking creepy freaks.

If you're content to have them on here then so be it. I'd have disposed of them long ago but it is your site so do what you want. But I'd request, for the sake of the sanity of many members, that this sort of rota stuff is at a minimum split into a separate forum. Perhaps even remerge the Newsroom and TV Home boards and replace the newsroom with a presenters and personalities board. But please stop it from ruining every thread on the site.

And before anyone comes back at me (who doesn't actually mod at metro) with a snidey "oh but metro is a clique and you ban everyone" comment.... here is a post from yesterday by Malpass. *malpass*

We *don't* ban everyone on a whim, despite what *plymouth might tell you
