FACT ATTACK:
Quote:
The Metropol Upload Service has now been running for 1 year, 9 months and 6 days

In that time we've had 3323 files totaling 3333.3MB uploaded (average file size = 1MB), with bandwidth averaging at about 26MB a day.

The "up" subdomain has used 16GB of bandwidth in its time (which happens to be exactly twice that of the forum itself.

The most active user is davidlees followed by chie, bail, gav and beep. Busiest day is a Tuesday, quietest is a Saturday, and the most popular tag is "news"

And so, you may ask - aside from the fact that the disk usage stats are are on a fab number today - why am I mentioning all this? Well very simply, we want to know what we can do better.

I'm going to leave this quite open-ended but we'll be working on a new version (version 4) of the site over the next few months and we want to know what the other users find good and bad about the site and what they'd like.

There's also the issue that some things are obvious to myself and Sput are not obvious to others. Bail for example didn't realise what the tick/cross button was for until the other week. Do you know about the automatic thumbnail generation? Do you realise you can upload five files at a time?

What do you want to see for the next version, have tags been a failure? If so, why? Should others be able to tag your stuff? Did the autotag system cause more trouble than It was worth?

So please do let us know about the yays and nays and wants, because there's no way of knowing unless you tell us.

PLEASE RESPOND, here, or on Metro.

YES!!! What do you mean by active though? Most uploads?

The tags didn't really add anything for me because I very rarely (read never) search for files on the Upload service. If I need to repost one of my own files to TV Forum, I just look through a list of my own files on the Upload Service if I need to repost someone elses file I just find the old thread on TV Forum and copy the image/video URL (whether that be a Metropol hosted file or otherwise). I suppose the tags may become more useful in time. When I have thousands of files, it may become easier to search based on tags rather than just go through the list of files. It could be useful to allow others to tag files. Would anyone bother? My guess is no. I try to give my files sensible names so I have never had a problem with the autotag system.

So please do let us know about the yays and nays and wants, because there's no way of knowing unless you tell us.

The only problem I have had with the upload service is the slow download speed when trying to stream videos. I imagine this is out of your control but I would be interested in hearing if anyone else has this problem. It could well be my Internet connection of course.

It would be nice if you had a system like YouTube where it was possible to upload a video file and then the system converts it in to a format suitable for playback using the TV Forum [video] and [wsvideo] tags. This is probably more work than it is worth though. Although, just thinking about it now, it would probably be possible for people to upload a video file to the Upload Service, the Upload Service uploads it to a dummy YouTube account and then after YouTube has done the video processing and converting, the Upload Service downloads it from YouTube as a mp4 or flv file ready to be played back on TV Forum. In other words, let YouTube do the difficult bit.

I'd also like to win money and other prizes by using the upload service.

PLEASE RESPOND, here, or on Metro.

What is this Metropol thing I keep hearing about?

I've noticed that Firefox and IE fail to cache Upload Service files, instead downloading the files afresh every time I refresh/revisit the page they're posted on. This isn't good for your bandwidth and it's annoying for me, especially on mocks where someone's posted 10 big images. Can you fix it?

Megabytes uploaded in total. "Active" prob wasn't the best word but its what is written on the admin screen. tsk @ that. (sig noted btw Wink )

I can't say its affected me (on Telewest) majorly. The server is in LA so I find there is occasionally a slightly slow ping speed but then once the connection is made the download itself is quite snappy. Will investigate though if others are finding it slow, can email the host and whinge a bit.

Regarding the YouTube issue, it's something we've looked in to but it's probably going to be more hassle than its worth. I mean essentially the issue with transcoding is processor time and although our host gives unlimited bandwidth/space they will ask you to move onto a dedicated (as in expensive) server if you start clogging up the processors.

Getting youtube to do the slog and then using their files is something I've never considered although given there isn't an API for this AFAIK and that we'd prob keep getting kicked off for abuse might make it tricky.

Ha. Well you could have won 25 if you'd entered Dimblebot's competition during the election

Another reason to read Metropol, (which is TVF's off-topic / radio / technical sister site if that last question was serious) Smile

Also have noted your (David) comments on the tags and Chie's on cache issues, although I thought they DID cache nicely, it was something we worked on at some point. Will add it to the list.
