METROPOL UPLOAD SERVICE 2.0

*

Coooeee, some good news for all you uploader types, the new version of Metropol's Upload Service has just been launched and it should make uploading files for TV Forum much easier.

For those who don't know, you can access the system by clicking this icon http://www.tvforum.co.uk/img/icons/upload.png on the posting page (top left of the big box for the post itself).

So what's new?
Well first of all, login has been much improved with full session integration between the Metro forums and upload service. Which in English means if you're signed into one, you'll be signed into the other.

In addition the new form should allow your browser to remember passwords and give you the option of whether you want to stay logged in or not.
*
By the way if this is new to you, a Metropol account is seperate from your TVF account, if you've not got one already, it takes moments to sign up and there's no rule saying you have to post on the forum or anything like that.

*

File management in the old service confusing at best, infuriating and leading to accidntal deletions at worst. Plus there was the most unfriendly embedding system known to man. But fear not, because thanks to some careful stealing of code from youtube it's all rather fab now.

Each file in your library has a little + sign, and clicking that shows the individual tags for bbcode or using thumbnails, in addition its harder to accidently delete files with the button not only being in there but asking if you're sure.

Finally, the confusing stars for hidden/public files has been replaced by a simpler "show in library" yes no system using ticks and crosses. One thing to bear in mind though, if you want to hide a file on upload, you now need to UNTICK the box. It should be clear enough on the form though Smile

*
And while you're uploading, you can now add tags much easier using our handy tag picker with all those important tags already there. But what if you're uploading an image of Channel TV I hear you ask? Well simply type it in the box (seperate with commas) and it'll tag it with your choice if tag Smile

So yes, thats the basics, do let us know what you think, or any problems you find. We've had reports there are bugs with Safari but we've not been able to reproduce them so feedback on that would be greatly appreciated. Email uploads@metropol247.co.uk with any feedback, or just post it in this thread.

Enjoy Smile

quick note, anyone who had been having trouble logging in using IE8 should hopefully find that problem fixed Smile

Hi all, it appears the tagging isn't working out quite as intended and as a result the list becomes more fragmented with every file that's tagged. To rectify this, tomorrow we'll be limiting tags to a set list from which you should be able to choose several that suit your file.

We'll be sure to add a "suggest a tag" feature and make the current tag list more diverse to suit the sorts of uploads we've had over the past few months. Hopefully this will make it easy to find files that are similar to each other. As for the existing tags, I'll be trawling through them and making them fit the new scheme.

The new tagging system is up and running. If you think we've missed an important tag, please post it here Smile

right then, I have tried my best to make the thing work decently in IE7. I mean it doesn't work right like it does in firefox or IE8, the spacing is mucked up, the footer is off, the upload button is ugly and the entire form bounced 10px to the right when you approach it but at least its useable now.

I mean were people actually using it like that? Has everyone upgraded to IE8 or did nobody bother to mention that it was broken so we could try and fix it?

It's a complex enough service to get right at the best of times so a little bit of bug reporting would be really nice if anyone finds an issue. Smile

Cooooeeee all!

Well, no-one seems to like tagging files so I've been insanely great and made the uploader analyse the name of the file being uploaded. If it matches the tags we've got then it'll figure it out. It's not comprehensive of course, so do feel free to add more tags yourself to help people find your fabulous treasures!

You might also notice that there are spaces allowed in filenames, but TVF doesn't like it. A fix is on the way!

Okay, hopefully we've implemented some rather more informative error messages for when files are not found/removed/a user is banned.

Hey folks. I've finally pulled my finger out. If I've got it right, caching should now be working AND things like mp3s will be recognised as such and not compel you to save them to your hard drive all the time.

Let me know if I've ballsed it up.

Hi all. So for the past few days a complete balls-up by me meant that any attempts to upload a file resulting in the less-than-helpful "Error 10". I've just this minute sorted the issue, so it should be good to go.

My apologies. You should never play with databases after 9pm Smile
