There have been occasions revently when members have appealed to moderators in threads to lock a topic as they feel it is running out of steam, or they feel it is losing track.

Why should the mods lock it though? If public opinion is so then why not just leave the thread to wallow in the mud? If it's gone off topic it won't be posted in again usually. It's just some people seem to enjoy going round saying "mods, please lock this thread" or recently "Charlie, where's your padlock".

It would be interesting to hear what other people have to say on this subject.

And please - no lock requests in here?

Thanks.

When people post things like "please lock this thread" it is of no interest to anyone but the mods, it also keeps the thread up top.

Whether the thread should be locked or not comes down to what is felt is best for that thread, there should be no set rule for all threads in my opinion. I can understand a moderator locking a dying thread to encourage people to post new developments in new threads, locking the thread stops people going back to it when a new one has already been started.

My opinion is that if you feel the thread should be locked, use the RTP link or PM one of the mods and let them deal with it. I would imagine that to be a more effective way of getting the mods attention rather than littering the thread with requests for padlocks.

Why can't people check a thread has not already been opened on a programme/subject.

I opened a TOTP thread recently, then someone opened up another one about 4 weeks later, when mine was still being used.

I mentioned about the audience problems in that thread originally as well.

(It's not sour grapes on my part, just daft. I would never start up a rival 'Central West & BBC Midlands' thread just for the sake of it ! That's TV Mercia's thread in my opinion !)

if that's aimed at me, I spent ages looking for the old TOTP thread but couldn't find it.

Generally people who want threads locked are people who for some reason go in a huff and do not want to be further criticised.

There's a member who appears ever so often called something like Omopea, he posts several half decent but slightly odd mocks, and then deleted thgem all, wipes all trace of his posts and demands all threads be locked. Very odd.
