Granada North West Today
It's been a few months since I last posted an update in here. Although that's not due to a lack of updates, but mainly because if I posted about every single update that'd get tedious very fast! As we near the end of the year, I'm collating a few interesting stats together about the site for 2017. Because who doesn't like those! But in the meantime, here's a summary of some of the things that have been added to the site since early September:-

Presentation

Content has been added to the site either for the first time or updating the existing pages for BBC Four, ITV Be, E4, 4Seven, 5Star, 5USA, Film4, My5, 4Music, 5Spike, Quest and Quest Red. Channel 4 have also had a mini refresh in the middle of things!

* * *

That's before you get into the site's Christmas coverage this month, which has covered all the regular terrestrials as well as some of the smaller channels like Quest Red and STV2, and also includes every day of the Channel 5 Advent Calendar (including today). Or at least every day except where it was unexpectedly dropped for the last 2 days of the Christmas countdown.

Adverts
A bunch of ads from 1996 have been added to the site, all recovered from a trusty yet slightly worn Betamax setup. Including a special advert for Ford Escort put together for the premiere of Groundhog Day on ITV in 1996.

Teletext
On the 18th December this year, a new sequence for BBC1 Ceefax from 21 years earlier was added to the site. Christmas decorations are in place and the schedules have been released. Meanwhile in news, the Duke of Edinburgh is putting his foot in it again, Burgers are going to be offered to kids to go to school (well before Jamie Oliver's time here) and Pizza Hut are still a rapidly expanding chain with a massive program of branch openings planned for the UK.

PS - If you were particularly observant, you may have spotted the site was running on reduced power via our RBS setup yesterday. Which may have resulted in some picture noise and ghosting effects if you were on a further away transmitter.

As promised, a few site stats to welcome in the new year for those who just really like stats. Some negative comments on how much one person can do towards the back end of 2016 really spurred me on this year. And so as we draw a close on 2017 for TV Whirl, I thought I'd give a quick look back at a few of the things that have been achieved in the busiest year in the site's history so far.

* 650 new video clips added, taking the site total to around 2200. So 30% of all site video has been added in 2017.
* Increased the resolution and put most of these out at 50fps.
* 5322 larger resolution images added to the site.
* Coverage from 20 additional channels.
* 1585 teletext frames added to the site, meaning there's now over 2000 teletext pages available on the site.
* 1 new DVB-T/T2 tuner, 2 additional DVB-T tuners, 2 additional DVB-S tuners, 2 analogue tuners, a Betamax machine and a Roku player added to the collection of capture hardware in place for the site.
* 23 new website logos designed. Unfortunately 22 of those were lost in an incident with some magnets, which also destroyed all backups at the same time. Woe is me!

A lot more is planned for 2018 as the site moves into it's 17th year online. Indeed some further DVB-T2/DVB-S2 hardware has already been acquired and is just waiting to come into use, and we already had our first 3 clips from 2018 online within the first 2 hours of the year dawning, Okay, it was only Oneness, but hopefully there'll be some nicer things to showcase in the months ahead.

Thanks to everyone who's shown support for the website this year, and here's to a Happy New Year 2018!

Just a small feature page added to the site today taking a look at some of the continuity from around the nations and from other channels as they marked the crossover from 2017 to 2018. For those who were either out partying until late, nursing a hangover in the morning, or only thought to watch BBC One Network to see what they would do for Oneness after midnight.

Latest - January/February 2018

It's been a little while, so time for our semi-regular roundup of updates throughout January and February on TV Whirl. Since the last update posted here in January another 115 videos and over 1100 images have been added to the site.

New Presentation
We were there straight off the bat with coverage within the hour for the launch of 5Select, The Sony Crime Channels and the switchover to Meteogroup for BBC Weather. There has also been a lot of additional content added to the E4 section, covering things like the recent additions to channel break bumpers to coincide with the new series of Celebs Go Dating.

* * *

Archive Presentation
The BBC News Channel coverage has been bolstered with a lot from the move to New Broadcasting House in 2013, including multiple sequences from across the day where Nick Higham grabs anyone he can get hold of in NBH to interview. Several new clips have also been added for Yorkshire Television from the late 90s, with a lot more to come on YTV as I work through a bit of a backlog there.

* * *

Adverts
There have been adverts added from 1986, 1991 and 1998, with such classics as Nationwide's stop-motion advert for people wanting to buy a home on Letsby Avenue, and a young Jeremy Clarkson advertising Granada Rentals only a few years before they ceased trading.

Teletext
A few additional sequences from 27 years ago in July 1991 added to the site. From BBC1 Ceefax, politics dominates the news heavily, and the late Ayrton Senna talks about how lucky he was following a crash that year. Or if you prefer the commercial point of view, the Oracle ITV service from the same day is also available - and as Park Avenue (the Oracle text-soap) prepares to move to a new home on Channel 4, you could win a mug with their old page number on! If anyone actually won one of these mugs at the time, do post up a picture!

Latest Updates - 4/3/2018

Archive Pres
As alluded to in the last post, this weekend has seen a bit of a bumper Yorkshire update on the site, with a lot of material added from throughout the 90s, including Yorkshire's version of the Christmas 1999 ident package introduced to the GMG North regions merely weeks after the generic ITV look had arrived.

Teletext
Keeping in theme with that, the first teletext stream from the Yorkshire region has also been added to the website. And it's a bit of a special one. Dating from mere days before the dawn of the new millennium, it provides a bit of a snapshot into how celebrations were unraveling across Teletext, as many people still hadn't made the move online.

Join in with Teletext counting down the remaining hours until 2000, and finding out what various famous names will be doing to see in the new year. In between trying to reassure everyone that the millennium bug isn't something to worry about - planes will not start falling out of the sky at the stroke of midnight and you don't need to panic buy all your food. Scattered throughout both the national and ancillary side of things are lots of pages about ITV's Year of Promise too - the well remembered flop from the network that aimed to create a permanent memorial to people's pledges on things they would do for the new millennium.

Yorkshire Look North (E.Yorks & Lincs)
Quote:
Yorkshire 2001 (Stone Balls)
With the generic look for ITV being tied up in continuing disagreements over 1999, GMG decided to commission their own full rebrand for Yorkshire locally. The chevron and well known jingle were retained, alongside clips from the region. A large number of variations on these new Yorkshire idents were made, featuring different towns, cities and other locations. Ultimately they were to only be in full use for a matter of months before the ITV generic look arrived in November 1999 and suddenly relegated the huge YTV set to use before only a small number of regional shows.

That description is wrong. The local and generic idents launched on the same day.

I love the autocorrect fail on page 113 of that Teletext capture, renaming long serving Calendar presenter Geoff Druett as Geoff Duress.

Yeah, people names are an absolute nightmare on that thing as they completely bypass the obvious spelling mistake check, and have to rely upon me spotting it by eye during the skim read. It's a very common problem in the Sports news pages too. And woe betide if someone has a name beginning with W, as that often turns on the graphics command and their name descends into squares!

And you're letting me off with the title 'Stone Balls'? Razz I'll fix that date for now, although most of the titles/descriptions of that purple batch are on a list to go through and update at one point. It was put together in a hurry with no info a while back ("er... it's a funny pointy thing!" anyone) and some of the videos were a bit too pixelated to actually make out the landmarks in at the time - they are some of the earliest 2001-era captures still on the site.

17 years ago on 22nd March 2001, TV Whirl quietly launched onto the internet. There was only a very small and tatty selection of RealMedia clips showing some television history in those days, but it was the starting block for something much bigger. With barely a day or two complete break usually due to hosting issues (remember Lycos?), the site has remained online ever since, and grown over the years to provide a mix of both contemporary and historic branding, programmes openings and adverts, but with a unique independent twist - meaning what you get are the often acerbic opinions of a single person!

Throughout this time we've been written off by many (repeatedly!), but despite that we've continue undeterred, branching out in new directions and adding unique features like the original teletext broadcasts to many areas of the site. There are no plans to stop this any time soon.

Thanks of course to all of those who have remained supportive to the site over the years. Expect more for the birthday celebrations over the next few weeks, and rest assured lots more is still to come in the future beyond that as we head into our next years on the internet.

Welcome to the Refreshed Look to TV Whirl - 22/4/2018

Regular site visitors will know I rarely roll out a new look to the site. So it may come as some surprise that after the best part of a decade in the old look with only a few tweaks, things are looking a little different from today. Some apologies as I had hoped to have this live in time for the birthday last month, but it's just taken a little longer than planned to update everything, especially as I've also kept up a full schedule of daily updates and scanning tapes for content to the site in the interim (more about those another time). However that short delay aside, it's finally gone online - Welcome to the newly refreshed look to TV Whirl. Clean, crisp, fresh - These are all the buzzwords marketers and designers like to use nowadays, but absolutely none of which you could use to describe the site.

You will however now see the use of larger images, random picks of clips you mightn't even realise were there, larger heroes (yes, the jury is still out on whether VHS really works there!), and an improved navigation system which sees the main menu updated and pinned to the top at all times now and also sees a new player where all videos are now brought into the page they're viewed on rather than sitting externally, so you don't have to keep jumping back and forth. Don't worry if you had any links pointing to the standalone player pages however as these have all been set up to magically redirect you to the new on-page location. All videos also now have extended metadata shown next to the description to bring additional information. This is mostly only on the newer ones at the moment, but will be rolled back on to older content and continually added to over time now that the space exists in the design.

There are one or two bits still to be tidied up over the next few days as you'd expect with any new look, but I hope you like the improvements to the site as we celebrate over 17 years online.
