It ceased updates, yes, but it did stay online. It was definitely working a couple of days ago.

It did close, but was kept online, just not updated. Didn't the owner want to make it into a commercial enterprise, with funding and the like, (which I don't think many liked the sound of)? He didn't get that, and hosting was too much, apparently, so it was left unchanged, on cheaper hosting.

What about the content, which I believe he never owned all of it with stuff coming from a number of different sources.

It can.
He never wanted to give it to other sites. I doubt this will change. The content is most probably gone.
I cant pass judgement until we get the full picture, that would be wrong. Hopeful some people download some of the content
