Future uncertain (January 2006)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

Discussions with my hosts in the last 24 hours have revealed that the main TV Room site will soon become a rather hefty burden on my personal finances. In the absence of some sort of sponsorship of the site, I do not feel that I can continue to keep the site online. It already consumes a large amount of my time and I feel that the additional money required to keep it going is simply not acceptable.

Ironic that its popularity may be its downfall.

Why don't you stick a Paypal button on your site and ask people to donate if they like it?

I'm sure quite a few people would be happy to chuck in a few quid.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing, because this site has the same kind of standard as TV ARK, and I wouldn't want to see it go.. Sad

Well I certainly don't want it to go down the tubes. I have put a hell of a lot of time and effort into it over the last seven years or so.

I do not mind continuing to spend the same amount of money on the site that I have been in the past but I now need to somehow make up the deficit in the light of the increased costs of hosting.

Because of the nature of the content, income through advertising is an issue; certainly, without the support of the broadcasters themselves. However, broadcasting organisations offer no support at all. Like everyone else, they're more than happy to have something like this online but they don't want to have to pay for it.

I am quite keen on the idea of having a number of 'shareholders' who would contribute fairly small amounts of money on an annual basis in order to support the hosting costs. Certainly, if anyone was interested in that, they can either PM me or contact me at the site e-mail address.

Failing some sort of resolution on this in the near future, the site will, sadly, have to go offline.

just out of interest, how much does it cost a year to host?

I cannot disclose publicly how much I am currently paying.

However, I can tell you that at typical commercial rates, given the current disc and bandwidth consumption, I'd be paying in excess of £1,200.

Hopefully, you'll understand now where I am coming from.

Perhaps you could remove some files. There are a hell of a lot at the moment and you could probably get rid of some without anyone noticing.

Is there anyway of finding out what files are least clicked on?

There are already quite a number of sections that have inadequate video coverage. Cutting back on existing content isn't really a suitable option in my book.

How about a sort of merger with the likes of TV Ark,or some other site?

Let me be clear: TV Room is not going to be watered down in any way, it will not be merging with other sites. It either remains online in its current form or it goes offline.

Point taken but why offer to take the content from The Continuty Booth knowing that you have issues when another site may have taken up the offer to host their content for possibly longer depending on if your issues can be resolved?

Get rid of all the fancy stuff such as the sub domains linking to mocks, tv announcers etc., and re-organise the main site.

IMO it was far better a couple of years ago before all the unnecessary flash and pretty backgrounds and graphics were added.

Remember the Kiss principle: Keep it Simple, Stupid.
