What are mega threads?

Generic threads that go on for hundreds of pages...

I think certain ones work well. In The Sport Thread, there is stuff posted on there each week that’s of interest but not worthy of it’s own thread. Of course usually the bigger talking points like Premier League rights or World Cups, will have their own thread.

You really don’t need a thread for a new F1 replay wipe but that usually would be worthy of a quick mention in the generic thread.

I think the balance that has been struck here in recent months is about right.

One thing I forgot to raise is being able to discuss certain things like French TV or international news presentation which are better suited for longer threads rather than being lost in single threads. It makes them a lot easier to read and find as with the French TV thread, it's easier to reference a previous discussion.

I have mixed feeling about the megathread restrictions. As Jon says, there is a certain balance to be struck. I can understand closing threads which end up looping around in circles, or threads where major developments can get buried, However, megathreads seem to work quite well for 'The Newsroom' and 'Media & Tech'.

For example, I'd argue that it makes more sense to have one thread covering international news presentation, as opposed to having lots of different threads consisting of only a couple of comments before being buried and having a new thread covering the same channel just two months later.

P.S. Rob, Whiskey will certainly do Laughing

Guys, I appreciate your opinions, thank you. They really do make a difference. I'll be reviewing things in the next week and will come up with a solution that (hopefully) will please everyone.

Anyway, I'm off to celebrate my football team finally winning a game...

I'd be inclined to argue let's just go with the flow. We don't have a mould for the new site yet; its an ideal opportunity to make one. Rome wasn't built in a day.

To my mind its pointless saying we won't do this, that and the other, especially since we're going to effectively port a significant chunk of the users here over there, because the first thing somebody will do (besides customary "I like this" type posts) is set up the key threads from here as a continuation of them. Well if we're going to do that we might as well just not close TV Forum in that regard, surely?

One argument against megathreads is that experienced in the breakdowns thread recently, where we know that the incident with Breakfast's regional opts getting mixed up was definitely discussed here in depth but we can't find those posts. If that had a dedicated thread it would have been much easier to find and refer back to.

I do wanna say something about megathread.

I feel like we make the megathreads incase the topic isnt worthy of it's own topic where as if we dont do them, we'll possibly several mini threads or something like that.

I respect what you're doing but this is just what I think.

Why? Threads can be merged and split later. Megathreads don't have to exist "just in case", that's like saying I'll hang some picture hooks on the wall just in case I decide to put up any pictures. Who has picture hooks all over their walls "just in case"?

I think the forum would become crowded if we made a new thread for every development. The current discussion in ITV Programming Thread is about something the continuity announcer said. This generated about 7 or 8 posts, so surely it is better to just discuss this in a general thread instead of making a new thread for only 7 posts.
