Yes, I was going to write that it deviates too far from the established visual language of internet forums, but thought that was too pretentious!

Very nice! Love the quick reply too.

Is it just me or when you looking at each section of the topic on the page, there no direct link to the last post made? Exclamation

Tags go off the side of the page. Or at least, they do on the topic I've just created. Sorry, I hope I'm not sounding too negative. I love the new site, I just would like a bit of ironing to be done on it.

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't noticed an option like we had in the old forum to go to where you left off a topic. (i.e. the first post that you haven't seen). Or is it blindingly obvious and just me being an idiot?

He's a few ideas...

Home Page:

Add a line between the different forums to break them up a bit more visually. I've also made lots of tweaks to the first forum category. It conveys they same information, but I think it looks better.

Not sure about this. It's quite difficult to keep track of which topics you've viewed and which you havent. But I've changed the highlight on the current page number, changed the "New Topic" button so it stands out more, and highlighted which forum you're in on the top menu bar (which makes more sense in the following post).

Odd/Even topics are banded in different colours to seperate them more. The subtitle is seperated from the new post, and I've applied the same styling as on the home page.

Topic Page:

I've taken the "TV Home" text out of the subtitle. As the menu bar at the top now includes the links to the forums, it's not needed there too, so by highlighting the section you're in, I think it can be removed without affecting usability.

Again, I've changed the highlighting on the page number, but on the side bar I've also swapped the social media links with the pagination - mainly to get those links as close to the top of the page as possible.

I've added a bit more white space into the end of the post too in order that it doesn't look too cluttered. Now I've posted these images, it's quite difficult to spot where each post begins and ends - a block of white space would do that nicely. I've also added an icon to the quote link which seems to be missing one.

---------------------------

Overall, it's much nicer than the old look, but with a few tweaks it can be even better. I'm especially liking the new features like "don't show poor mocks" Smile

The calendar time is wrong. On the new site, I noticed that someone had put the wrong time (7pm) for The X Factor start, when it actually starts at 8pm. So I added the new time, went back to the current site, and realised that the person had actually put in the right time of 8pm, it was just showing up as 7pm on the new site. So now my entry for 8pm on the neon site, says 9pm on the current site. I'm guessing this is just a case of the current site being on BST, but the beta site still on GMT.

My 'Red or Black' entry now also shows up as 8.15pm on the current site because I entered it as 9.15 on the beta site.

Thanks for all the comments so far. It’s been hard to view the site with fresh eyes given how much I’ve looked at it so it’s nice that I’m generally along the right lines and haven’t designed something horrific. I’ll try and get through everything mentioned, apologies if I miss anything.

Totally agree that the ‘extended’ version isn’t necessarily the way to go for a forum but it’s something I thought worth trialling – and there is the classic button on the sidebar to revert to a much more familiar view. I’m still in two minds over it but I have found myself glancing at each summary text when I’ve been visiting.

Unable to delete posts and signatures randomly not showing have been fixed and I’ve added a reply button for those not logged in.

Jump to latest unread is the “Updated” wrapper image (the topic title itself will also go to it in that case too, rather than the first page). Pete’s pretty much right with the DB/cookies not playing nicely. It *should* be running off the database. I will get this fixed once and for all so it will be accurate, regardless of what you’re browsing it on! Hopefully then it’ll help with any confusion.

The Lounge only goes up to Jun 2002 which is probably when it moved from flat-file to database. There’s a handful of threads from when we returned in Jan 03 but unfortunately, as with the other forums, the bits in-between have been lost forever.

Full credit goes to Yusuke Kamiyamane for the shiny new emoticon icons! (Phil, you can manually keep putting the old ones in if you wish! http://tvfi.co.uk/beta/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

The change being in June 2011 is a typo and should have course be June 2012…which still ended up being wrong anyway! I’ll amend.

On the homepage if you click the thumbnail then the bigger image itself it’ll take you straight to the post – may add a button as that’s not very obvious is it.

May change the mod/admin/new member status to make it more obvious!

I’ll look into the rating issue Rob, thought I’d fixed that last night. Similarly the issue highlighted by Critique too. And feeds too.

Getting PM notifications by email should return so I’ll put that in.

Happy to move the paging buttons if it’s annoying. Or what if they were inline with the bottom of the final post on the right, with the quick reply minimised?

Pad – have another stab at your prediction. I’ll make it more touch friendly too. Nice to see over 40 members have already put in their ideas for The X Factor this Saturday, good luck!

Videos do seem iffy which is a shame as they were working a little while ago, can’t think what’s changed but I’ll take a look…

Anyone have any preference over the background colour? Is white/grey a bit too bright or should the blue return? An early design kept the blue but it just didn’t look right for some reason. Maybe I should review it again but there seemed something refreshing about having a lighter background.

The calendar is an unfortunate issue in that it’s been fixed on the beta site. Dates are now being saved in the DB as GMT and now pulled out correctly for your timezone/daylights saving. What it means is that whichever site you submit a calendar entry on, the other one will be wrong. If I get chance I’ll probably just fiddle the old site to add an hour and ‘fix’ the old entries which were technically wrong.

Dosxuk – some very interesting ideas! I particularly like the highlighting of the current forum in the menu bar. That’ll please someone who we know isn’t a fan of seeing the forum name in the subtitle Wink Will have a proper look over tomorrow.

Would it be possible to have threads that have new posts in them highlighted in some way, like on the old forum. At the moment it looks like no one's posted anything when you go into a forum, other than by checking the date of the last post.

Ooh now that's interesting. I tried to quote Asa's post and it only did the first line (and didn't close the quote tags). Wonder if that's because it's a long post.

YAY at being right re: the updated threads problem.

I happen to *LOVE* all of dosxuk's suggestions, particularly the highlighted topic and the use of orange for the current page. I've been having the same issue where I'm finding it hard to focus on parts of the site and it's surprising how just a few minor tweaks can really make such a big difference.

I'm going to stick with the new style forum pages for the time being. I remember ages ago when I first installed phpBB3 on Metro I tried styling forums in a non-tabular way and was never happy with the results. I'm currently slightly uneasy with it but can't quite put my finger on why. Perhaps its purely because tables are SO ingrained for forums it's just throwing me full stop.

The classic view is vastly superior to the extended view - although (if possible) it should remain switchable.

The 24-hour update is fantastic, as (being someone who visits every 24 hours) it gives you a better view of the updates.

I agree that the background shouldn't be white, but the header and footer should remain distinct. May I suggest 89bdff?
