The whole YouTube set up got me thinking. Rather than linking to the video downloads as we do now, how about having the option to embed the clips in the page? There's a new tag I've added: [ video ]http://url_of_file.flv[ /video ] which allows this.

This is just an experiement so please don't start filling up pages with these clips for the sake of it but I thought it might be quite a useful feature. I've used the freeware Riva FLV Encoder (http://rivavx.de/index.php?encoder&L=3) which converts from MPEG/AVI/WMV/QT for the clip above.

The window is currently fixed at 480x360 but it shouldn't be too difficult to make that poster-specific in the future.

Let me know what you think!

Brilliant idea, would make things easier.

Though maybe it would be a good idea for the poster to include a link to a wmv or something, so you can download it in an appropiate format.

The player seems to be problematic. On your BBC One ident clip, the slider works as expected. However, when I used it over on the BBC1/2 shutdown thread, the slider always stays in the same place, and no matter where I move it, it starts from the beginning again.

Also, in the future, you could maybe skin the player, so that it complemented the other elements of the site's design.

The player isn't a part of the site, as far as I can see. The player is produced from the programme you use to convert the video. In this case it's Riva FLV Encoder.
