It must just be for that topic. Not that I get why the thread should be closed at all - it just means another thread gets started for no particular reason.
Interesting forum message on the old sport thread. Is that an automatic thing or manually put in just for that thread?

The same message will pop up for any 999+ page topic, just with the length of time adjusted.
It's a shame the same thread was created, that wasn't the point. A generic sport topic makes it much harder to see at a glance what is being talked about - I might for example have more interest in some Premier League changes than I would a bit of overrunning snooker but post are all muddled in together. And when you get to hundreds of pages I think there's a tendency to not want to contribute unless you're a regular. Some happily create separate threads but I'm not sure how to get around generic ones.

Don't bother? Just apply the same rules as with other threads and split off any discussion that may be significant.

We used to be quite happy with creating new threads for even the smallest of presentation changes so i don't know why we are now having great big long threads.
I've tried to avoid posting in The Sport Thread if i'm starting something new but that's been pretty much limited to tennis coverage as that's my main sport interest.
A separate Sport sub-forum might be the solution, but moderators need to be more active in breaking up the long threads i think.

Then there the other times were New threads have appeared to give out information or highlight something new and no one else adds it it. There has been times when some say, what a pointless thread as its BACK END channel.........

That's fine, if no-one has anything to add, just let them drop down the page.
Some people think that why you need a mega thread like the sports thread. Another problem is the search function doesn't do it job correctly. Which makes it harder to see if stuff could be better placed.

Thoughts.....
One fairly clear Sports Split which would produce a couple of clear and interesting threads, with regular additions, to start with would be
1. Sports Presentation
2. Sports Rights Awards
Going beyond that for now could fracture the topic and end up with some minority sports having threads going to archive before they've really started. Defining what's a big sport also could be problematic if individual threads were established.
