Evening all. I made a slightly lewd post over on Metropol a few days ago. Since then, I've been contacted by numerous individuals on various spin off websites encouraging me to push my idea forward seriously, so I'm going to.

From my perspective, many threads (but most particularly the ones relating to GMTV and its successors) are basically impenetrable due to the amount of discussion relating to the presenters. What I actually care about is what the programme(s) will look like - in the case of Good Morning Britain I've no idea if that's already been revealed, and if it hasn't, I'll probably be unlikely to notice because I've taught myself to ignore that thread.

I don't have much interest in News programming, but I'm informed that this problem is also rife in The Newsroom.

I think it would be a good idea separate off discussion relating to Presenters to a separate forum. This would allow both The Newsroom and TV Home Forum to focus properly on presentation and all the technical gubbins, which I feel is what most of the long time members are here for.

I totally agree with this 100% but there has to be a bit of leeway with this, for example...GMB launches, 1 or 2 weeks down the line one presenter is off and the other 3 cover their duties, I think that is more presentation and the programme rather than presenters and rotas due to it being about how the programme is affected by the absence rather than speculation as to why they are gone.

I couldn't disagree more. It's discussion like that which completely puts me off reading this sort of thread.

Further, I think your post illustrates a lack of understanding of what TV presentation actually is (or rather is accepted to mean) and this in itself is part of the problem.

I agree with what's been said, a sperate section of presenters would be a good idea. Of course we have all been guilty of talking about some presenters, and some leeway was given due to the fact it didnt happen often. Of course the programmes it self is presentation sets, format etc.

But its becoming very clear its getting on alot or peoples nerves, and something does need to be looked at.

I blame Digital Spy. That site has gone to the dogs since it became more celebrity and reality TV focussed and it's spilling on to other sites.

Anyway... I'm not sure a separate presenter/people type forum would be a good idea to be honest. It'll only encourage that kind of discussion further and potentially opens up the site for more libellous remarks being made.

The way things have been set up in The Newsroom have worked to an extent - for example having a Sky News Presentation thread and a Sky News Presenters and Rotas thread seems to have worked on the whole. No reason why that couldn't be applied a little more where necessary without segregating it all off.

... or GMB could be classed as a News broadcast.

Of course it would not solve the down market sytle, which ITV has manged to shack off only by moving the content to a separate channel.

Digital Spy does have a few good sections like radio etc.

Speaking as someone who has literally been on TV Forum daily since the day it launched on 22nd March 2001 (Happy 13th Birthday tomorrow, by the way) I think I'm best placed to say that to some degree TV Forum has always discussed news presenters. It's sometimes easy to have a rose-tinted, nostalgic view of the past but TV Forum has absolutely categorically always featured news presenter discussion in one form or another. As someone who signed up in the beginning I think I have a pretty good idea as to what TV presentation is all about - it's the whole package from titles, music, graphics, technology to presenters and more.

Personally, I don't think sectioning off presenter discussion into its own sub-form would be a terribly good idea. The trigger for the current problems with presenter discussion taking over is down to the newer members here. Presenter discussion has always taken place but it used to be in moderation. I would suggest the root cause was the creation of separate presenter threads. In a way it has legitimised that sort of discussion and has attracted members who wouldn't normally have found a place on TV Forum. My fear is that sectioning it off into its own forum will just further encourage them and detract from the rest of the content here.

I would rather see more intervening moderation to keep members on track and to cut dead some of the weird presenter discussion that takes place here. We've always discussed news presenters on TV Forum, but logging their absences is a new and strange development. I would much rather the problem be tackled head-on than giving them their own forum to play in.

Just in case you don't believe me....brace yourself while we hurtle back to TV Forum's very first evening....and look what topic we were discussing: http://www.tvforum.co.uk/tvhome/news24-presenters-37170/

I think it would be a good idea separate off discussion relating to Presenters to a separate forum. This would allow both The Newsroom and TV Home Forum to focus properly on presentation and all the technical gubbins, which I feel is what most of the long time members are here for.

I understand why the proposal has been suggested but I don’t think it would work in practice. It would have to be an all or nothing approach in order to be clear about what can be discussed where, and would leave very sober threads in the main forum if they could only be about graphics (or people posting “wrong forum” all the time). Where would invision continuity go?! Smile

For some reason the ITV breakfast threads do become very speculative and focused on presenters but I think that's typical in a scenario where we don't have a publicly confirmed launch date yet and are unlikely to be told much about the graphics prior to launch. And on GMB launch day I think the majority of us would want to post about the set design, graphics and the presenting team in the same post. It would be a disservice to force people to post in two separate forums.

We felt at the time that creating separate rota threads, keeping a closer eye on the more dubious comments in them and reacting to posts being in the wrong thread would help the situation, and I think it largely has. I appreciate Rob's comments in particular although when you've got presenters discussing their rota on Twitter, or a colleague's 'congrats' to someone's minor role change within a newsroom, it's no surprise that some people do want to talk about it on here.

I try and give new members a chance but clearly if their spelling and grammar spoils the flow of a topic or they're generally causing a nuisance then they will get banned, as happened to Televisionbigfan.

At least in those days it was general enough to get everyone involved with topics like "favourite presenter" as opposed to "Charlie Stayt has only presented one Friday in the last month...does he have problems at home?"
