To be honest Simon, for the bandwidth TV ARK is encoding their clips, for 150kbps, it should be 240x180. (4:3)
It did bother me, you encoded the Ian Stirling video and the Westcountry ITV50 etc...at a better quality but the video size is too bloody small.

TV ARK is a great site, just their need to be a generic rule into how you encode your clips.

The problem for me is my capture card baulks at anything bigger than 256x192, so unless the source is DVD I can't really consider making the clip bigger.

That said, tonight I have done a batch of clips (sourced from DVD) at 280x210. Look out for these shortly.

My advice to The TV Room

Needs a new layout as the current one is getting old, and the new ones are confusing - also it needs more video clips and material.

there's nowt wrong with the layout / look (aside from it being a bit heavy on the html but that's code not layout).

i think it's a very nice looking site

But you have to admit it can do with a makeover.

no - i won't. because there's absolutely nothing wrong with the currentl look.

Oh no no no. It's not that it has a problem, it's just that it could do with a new look. Like Channel 4's previous idents were fine but they wanted a change.

Hmm.. sounds like you need a new capture card, if you can afford it. Surprised
Also I know TV ARK are finding trying to protect their clips from web-snatchers, but that VT Clock and Testcard with the noise is sooo annoying, couldn't it be that Silver background with "TV ARK" written on it.

I prefer the layout of The TV Room, but more video clips are needed. TV Ark needs to be updated to include the new Channel 4 and E4 presentation. Just my two cents.

Of equal consideration should be whether I can find one that works!

My current card (a Hauppauge WinTV) was purchased in early 2003, when compatibility for Windows XP was a major issue. It does what we need for TV Ark but the teletext software has never worked. The card for my previous computer (an ATI) gave better results, but doesn't work in this machine.

Any recommendations are most welcome. What about the WinTV PVRs? I hear the 350 is quite good.

Would they be less annoying without sound?

Gareth made the bumpers, any ideas should go to him. Where is this silver background?

I probably made the screen grabs independently of the AVI file. One of those Ian Stirling clips (the closedown) was a nightmare to capture because the source quality was so poor; there were several dropped frames to "patch up". Once the footage goes onto DVD we can re-encode, with better results.

Simon,

It probably isn't so much a problem with the card itself, more the software and drivers and/or your machine. How old is your computer, and what is its spec?

Also, I have found that Hauppauge's driver and applications software to be, for the better word of it, utter crap. Under XP on my old computer (which dates back to around 2000), using the supplied WinTV driver and applications would cause the computer to blue-screen or crash completely. Performance under Windows 2000 wasn't any better, in fact, it was worse and it would just turn the screen and the air around it blue.

Aside from the instability, the fact was the AVI capturing a severe limit at that time, even for a few minutes of video would easily consume a few gigs of disk space.

I would recommend you get rid of all WinTV applications and drivers and try the open source ones. More info here.. Now, I'm not one of those people who bang on about open source incessantly, and preach, but let me tell you one thing - the open source drivers when used in conjunction with a third party applications to capture video/stills (Intervideo WinDVR) and radio (Radiator) were a darn sight better than those provided by Hauppauge. OK, so the lack of teletext isn't a biggie for me (as I never use teletext; I prefer the good old TV guide or newspaper for looking at the TV schedules) but you MIGHT be able to get it to function under the new drivers, but I make no guarantees.

Since using these drivers (on my old Windows 2000 machine and on this one when I got it last year) the stability has been excellent. No crashes, no freezes and no blue screens. And so has the ability to capture to MPEG at full resolution, rather than 160x120 at 15fps AVI which still consumed acres of hard drive real estate.

I would suggest you consider changing your drivers and software before you go out forking money on new gear, when you potentially have hardware (that I assume) is in perfect, working condition.

The computer is three years old in December. AMD Athlon XP2200+ processor, 120GB drive, 512 DDR. I'd be surprised if the machine was at fault, it was brand new when I got it.

Really? I thought only the manufacturer's software can be used with the card, so this is an eye-opener. The software has never crashed my machine, but teletext has never worked and there have been no updated drivers available.

Sounds interesting. Ironically I wouldn't be able to use teletext even if it did work, as there is no RF input. But you feel more at ease when all the software that came with the card works properly.

Thanks again and I will look into this; can't believe I've been capturing all this time thinking I was tied to the manufacturer's software! And it would have been just like me to get new hardware... Rolling Eyes
