I've seen this on other sites, some completely littered with them. Luckily BBC News tell us that the links have been carefully chosen by our journalists .
I quite like this; it's a handy way to get more information without leaving the site and Googling names etc.
Is the information taken directly from wikipedia? Can the BBC vouch for it's accuracy...
