Hi all,
Im starting up my own tv channel. It will be availiable through cable, with Telewest. Im trying to make a deal to give me a channel but it takes ages. The channel will focusing on news, entertainment, technology and music. No sport, as its boring and i cant get deals with all the major people Crying or Very sad But im still happy, im in the process of designing the idents and bumpers. Im using flash mx, do you think thats a good choice? Thanks me. Very Happy

er... when you rang up Telewest Customer Services to ask about getting a channel, this 'taking ages' didn't go along the lines of 'just hold on the line for a minute sir', at which point some music sounding incredibly like a dialing tone started playing, did it? Laughing

Sorry about being skeptical, but seeing as anyone setting up a channel tends to do so in the utmost of secrecy (eg Setanta, CBM.. until it went tits up), I have my doubts over someone posting all this (and implying he's a one-man operation). It would be highly unlikely even on Sky, so on Telewest....

why should i keep it quiet? its good to let everyone know. I think at least. How lonng does it take Telewest to get you a channel space? Its ages.

time to start crying Crying or Very sad they said NO. So ive decided that im going to introduce it as a Internet Channel via streaming. I dont know if this has ever been done before, but i couldnt care as im trying it now. I think this is a good choice cause now the whole WORLD can view it (as long as they have broadband) which is cool as ill be reachinbg a wider audience. Very Happy luigi

Well I'm not surprised that they rejected you. A one man band operation isn't really going to impress the people at Telewest in the slightest.

Even if you stream over the web, you will need loads of outgoing bandwidth - at least 256kbps per stream for broadband if you want a reasonable picture and sound quality in Real or WM. Given that the adverage cable/DSL line in the UK does has a max of 256kbps upload, you will find it very hard to do it. It's just not realistic unless you have a very expensive leased line to cater for viewers.

Nevermind the clear losses you would make - I find it hard to imagine you earning enough from advertisers to compensate from buying the rights to programmes, getting a dedicated 2Mb line etc.
It just seems daft...leading me to the conclusion that you're takin the p*ss.

Anything sounds better than NTL's (Non) Local Channel, ex-CWC areas Channel 14, most of the time the picture quality is worse than Yes 661.
