Another site to hit bandwidth troubles...

(September 2001)

This site closed in March 2021 and is now a read-only archive

Geocities has warned me that a couple of accounts that contain video clips have exceeded the bandwidth limit (3GB/month). They won't suspend access to the clips, but 'shortly' they will start enforcing this limit.

Can anyone suggest any FREE internet servers that have a high or no bandwidth limit? Shocked Shocked Shocked

Spread over more Geocities accounts, wll mean less bandwidth.

Say a new account for downloads, rather than a main account etc.

I got one of those e-mails from Geocities about RamsayLives and I hardly upload pictures and theres no downloads on the site. I was wondering if your allowed to open another account, cause some companys don't like you doing that cause it breaks their terms and conditions.

Well, ANOTHER SITE - TV.Vancouver has been hit with the same Geocities message...

I'm getting quite suspicious about these warnings, because suddenly ALL my Geocities accounts have been sent a warning letter...

Is Yahoo! crying wolf?

Downloads occur every time someone unique visits your page, as the pictures are downloaded to their hard disk.

From taking a quick look at your page, it appears your pictures are far, far bigger (in terms of file size) than they need to be. There is also a .wav file that automatically plays - more downloading.

I would suggest shrinking your images, you should be able to drastically reduce your data transfer with a virtually un-noticable change in image quality. I suggest that you save your pictures as .jpg's rather than .gif's at about 75-80% compression.

Your page should then load much faster.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realise that Gifs took up so much disk space.Smile
