If your monitor (or eyesight) has lost the sensitivity to the subtle alternating shades - and they've always alternated in this fashion - why take your own vision to be truthful when you can see the very real difference for yourself in numeric value?
Just take a screenshot of a bunch of topic posts, such as those on this page, then import the screenshot into any graphics prog with an eyedropper tool that can tell you RGB values, and see the difference in two consecutive posts' backgrounds by sampling the colour with the eyedropper and reading the difference in the respective values - that should clear any further doubts!
