Quick question: Internet on new PC?

Our computer is currently Plug and Play.

Essentials really have to be Excel, Powerpoint and Word and Paint (or Windows Picture/Fax viewer) for photos etc. Also Windows Media Player and the games section really as my parents like the games like solitaire, spider solitaire etc.

Otherwise, we don't really need anything extra as I probably use the computer the most and that's, most of the time, for exploring the internet.

OK, the new PC has finally arrived! Very Happy

No problem getting the internet up and running - and don't need the extra speakers I thought I would either Very Happy

However, yet again I have a problem with a printer!

One of the main reasons for getting a new PC was that no All-in-one printer was compatable with our machine - but the problems continue - this time it's the processor.

Any tips for checking these things before you buy the thing - I'm fed up of buying things, unpacking them and not finding out until half way through installation they aren't compatable!

Any good sites that help you in doing this?

Hiya all, quick question remaining on the new PC theme.

We've decided to buy a new computer, however I'm a novice when it comes to sorting out what is required.

A few questions it would be great for anyone to help me out with:

1) We are currently with BT Yahoo Broadband - when we get the new computer how are we able to retain the desktop icon link to launch this (and thereby gain access to the internet)?

2) I have two speakers from Tiny which simply connected to the back of the main hard drive. Could I connect these up with the new PC if the hard driver allows for "speakers"?

3) I've got a fair few files I want to transfer from old PC to new. I know a memory stick is probably the best option, but is it best to buy a smaller memory stick and transfer more times, or is it better to buy a larger memory stick so the number of transfers is somewhat reduced?

Any comments on all these would be most appreciated. I read the boards every day so I'd hate to be without computer use and not be able to act upon any advice anyone is kind enough to give me.

Many thanks.

By the way , I'm also signed up with BT Yahoo! Broadband , and you shouldn't need the launch application. It's just more trash that they want to force on you - I don't use that application at all.You will however need the driver disk that came with the router/modem so as to install it for your new PC.Just insert the disk into your new PC and follow the instructions but don't connect it until the flash demo instructs (I guess specific device drivers are needed).

To "transfer" your internet connection , if you are using a router then after installation you should be already connected as the ADSL line is not turned off by having a device not connected to it.If you use a modem then you need to be mindful of the fact the connection itself is defined within the Network Connections folder. The info from this must be copied over onto a flash drive and pasted to the corresponding folder on the Windows installaton of your new PC.(I can't remember exactly , the last time I had a modem setup was a long time ago). This is so that Windows has enough information to connect to BT Broadband as this is not handled by a router.

As for the second question , that seems rather a strange speaker setup having them connected to your hard drive.I know that CD/DVD drives must be connected to the system board for sound (as well as data) though.Think you mean the back panel where you connect your (blue) monitor cable - in that case then you can connect them to any PC because all PC's have sound out ports.

Third question : Flash drives can wear out and I have personal experience of that (fortunate in that I managed to get the drive up long enough to copy all of my school files off it.).This would only happen after a long period of time though , but I would think it made more sense to burn all of your files to CD/DVD and transfer them that way , but if you can't then I'd think it more sensible to use a larger flash drive...

Hoped that answered all of your questions...(I'm a bit of a computer geek with a passing interest for graphics)

An Evesham something or other!

No other problems with it at all that I've noticed - except that on the channel4sales.com site none of the (presumably) flash content comes up - like the menu, the main graphics and the video.

Other flash content seems to be fine though!
