It's a nice idea, and I think Steve Naylor (one of the forum's long serving members) actually put it into action - youngjournalists.co.uk was the address I think. However, I agree with dvboy that it won't work. You'd probably be better getting some hospital radio work if you want to go into broadcasting, or newspapers if you want to go into print journalism.

Hello! Did I hear my name mentioned... sorry for long delay in replying, shows how much I come in this forum!

Yep - youngjournalists got pretty popular but then as I got older, went to uni, etc, I just didn't have the time for it. But I like the idea - though completely agree with most of these in this thread that it's no substitute for 'real' experience.

If you want to do newspapers, help with a school paper, then uni/college paper, then ask to help at your local paper. Even if it's just being there and making coffee/tea, it's a foot in the door.

If it's broadcasting that's your thing, have a look around your local radio station, help with student radio, try getting work experience, etc, etc.

I did loads of bits at loads of papers / stations whilst at uni, then got a job straight after uni and then moved up the ladder to head the news team at my radio station.

Every little helps - and when looking for people to take on now, or when looking for people to come in and do work experience, it's the enthusiasm and experience that makes all the difference.

PM me if I can help at all.

First and foremost, I do like the look of the site from the development front page - the logo and graphics work well IMO.

As with Londoner, I do think that you should keep it local - your nearest city or town in Scotland perhaps? The simple fact is that if people want national or world news, they would go to bbc.co.uk or sky or whatever.

At the end of the day, you wouldn't be able to get breaking news, as I doubt you'd be able to get the news from where it matters, when it matters, and you would have to rely on the news websites or channels above anyway.

However, I do feel there is a lack of local news websites which spring into the mind like the BBC does for national news. I think you could do very well at your age if you report the news from your own eyes - i.e if theres anything youve ever been curious of, go out and investigate! I think you would benefit a lot more and would get a lot more hits if you focused on light-hearted features.

At the end of the day, its your site to do whatever you want with - so most important of all, good luck! Very Happy

Thanks

Thats a different way of looking at it. However my town is very unexciting infact the most exciting thing I can think of is Safeway changing to Somerfield!! But seriously, There would only be so many people interested in finding out about my town.

If you're looking to create a local site a good example of one to look at would be ruberyvillage.co.uk which my friend Nic set up.
