That's what science IS Lorns. You make stuff up (based on lots of reading and previous research by other people), test it by experiment and see if it agrees with what you predict. Then you publish it, other people try and replicate it and poke holes in your hypothesis. Through lots of this someone eventually comes up with something pretty robust and if no-one can fault it no matter how hard they try, it becomes a Theory.
Really, it's about getting to the truth, not being apparently right. The media never understands that and reports with too much certainty. Einstein proved that Newton's ideas about gravity are wrong in some obscure circumstances and there's an even more obscure set of circumstances in which it looks like Einstein was wrong.
Not necessarily. If you get something totally unexpected and no-one has a clue what's going on you'll get funding because it's weird and needs investigating more.
